Reading Tai Chi: The Perfect Exercise was, for me, like talking to an old (in the sense of experienced), wise friend not about “exercise,” but about the meaning of life and the movement and flow, which is the nature of it. I studied Tai Chi for a time many years ago but somehow got tangled up in the appearance of the form and in the execution of it: trying to follow along, trying to look like the teacher (or the cool students), and trying to feel amorphously “dedicated.” That was due partly to my own immaturity and partly because we were being taught the physical movements without a context. If I had read this beautiful book then– even a few chapters - with its description of Tai Chi’s Taoist underpinnings and its foundation in the natural world of movement and energy, I believe I might have had a very different experience - one more akin to the experience I am having now moving back into this world by experimenting with the simple flowing ideas, meditations and movements found in this book.
