Mary Robert Rinehart (1876-1958) was a prolific American author of mysteries, and is credited as the source of the phrase "The butler did it," although it does not appear in her writings. Rinehart began writing professionally in 1903 continued to her death in 1958, producing hundreds of novels and short stories.
