Speaking as a Southerner, I can say that Ms. Thompson, a fellow Georgian, presents a perceptive and accurate description of the history of the South over the past 150 years, and an account of its present condition that is both true and optimistic. She recognizes the problems and weaknesses that Southerners are themselves largely responsible for, and she looks to the future with an positive view that Southerners' ability to adapt and to accept change will serve them well.
