When I read the first book in this series, The Rules for Disappearing, last year, I realized how much I missed reading mystery/suspense books. I spent a good part of my youth reading every Fear Street, Nightmare Hall and Christopher Pike book I could get my hands on. The Rules for Disappearing was reminiscent of those and, well, with the way it ended, I was desperate for more. It wasn't a cliffhanger, but a teaser and it did its job. It's going to be difficult to review this book without spoiling the first, so proceed with caution.  The Rules for Breaking picks up very soon after The Rules for Disappearing. Anna and her family thought everything was over, but little did they know what was in store for them in the very near future. I won't spoil any of it for you, but this book was fast-paced and full of action and suspense. Faces from the past reappear and people who were supposed to be trusted couldn't be. I was kept guessing right up until almost the very end of the book. I never did guess who was responsible for everything, and I'm usually pretty good at figuring this type of mystery out.  I was impressed with Anna's strength and determination in The Rules for Disappearing and was even more so during this book. Everything she was going through was incredibly tough and while she probably could have been more honest, sooner, she did a remarkable job with the situations she found herself in. Her willingness to sacrifice her own safety for the ones she loved made her stand out in my mind.  This series was more mystery/suspense than romance, but love did play a role in Anna's motivation. I adored Anna and Ethan. I was also happy to see that even with the reappearance of a guy from her past, this never turned into a love triangle. Don't get me wrong, I'm ok with a good love triangle every now and then, but it would've annoyed me in this situation with everything else going on in this book.   I'm a romantic at heart, so I don't read a lot of mystery or suspense books any more, but The Rules for Breaking gave me a little of both. I'm impressed with Ashley Elston's first two books and look forward to more like this from her in the future.  I received a copy of this book from the publisher, via NetGalley, in exchange for an honest review.

A fast-paced, thrilling, and very enjoyable read, The Rules for Breaking was a fantastic YA romantic thriller. I loved this book! It took all the thrills and romance that made book 1 so good, and did it just as well. Loved it! Anna was great in this book. She started off trying to live a normal life but, with Thomas on the loose, that could only last so long. And, when that normal life shattered, Anna was determined to end the threat and find a way to finally be able to live without fear. She proved, again, that she was strong, clever, and willing to do anything to keep the people she loved safe. I liked her in book 1, and I liked her just as much in book 2. Ethan was still absolutely adorable. Now fully drawn in to the danger, he showed just how resilient he could be. He was determined to help Anna and keep her safe. And he was still so sweet and gentlemanly, even in some very dire circumstances. I just adored him. The romance was lovely. More than being a sweet couple, Anna and Ethan were a badass team. They worked together and helped each other survive their chaotic situation. I thought they were perfect together. The plot was fast paced and I was hooked the entire way through. There were tons of thrills and secrets that kept me on the edge of my seat. And more than one person was not who they seemed and that led to a few surprises along the way. I really enjoyed the story and the ending was great. There is room for another book with the way it ended, but most of the loose ends were tied. So, we'll see about a book 3. The Rules for Breaking was a brilliant YA romantic thriller. With romance, surprises, secrets, and tons of thrills, this book was fantastic. Fans of book 1, you won't be disappointed with this one. And, YA lovers, this is definitely a series worth checking out. *I received a complimentary copy from the publisher in exchange for an honest review

MY THOUGHTS  I enjoyed reading The Rules for Disappearing! Though, I was surprised that there was a sequel and wasn't quite sure where it was going, this book really surprised me! Anna and her family are now free from the Witness Protection Program, but Thomas was still out there. After a series of events that cause the agents to suspect that he knows how to get to the family and that the family's lives are at risk, they, along with Ethan's family, move to an island temporarily. It's all in vain, as Anna, Teeny, and Ethan all get kidnapped and Anna has to figure out how to escape as well as save her family. If I thought The Rules for Disappearing was fast-paced, wow, this book exceeded that! All of the events in my little (sucky) synopsis happen at the very beginning of the book! So much more happens in the book and it's hard not to talk about it but, really, spoilers aren't fun!  This book really felt entirely different than the first book and I oddly liked that. I already mentioned how this book is much more action-packed and fast-paced, but it also had an entirely different feel. In Disappearing, Anna (Meg then) was upset by being in Witness Protection and was getting tired of it. She also was entirely clueless to pretty much everything (i.e. why they were in the program) and she was trying to create a semi-normal life. Not that she wasn't strong in that book, but she became stronger after the events in the last book. The events in this book are so much worse and so much more life threatening, but Anna is able to think things through and find out how to get out of this with her loved ones still alive. She has her breakdowns, but that makes it more realistic. It seems like I gave this a low rating and that might seem odd because all I've said have been good things, but I did like this book. That's what the rating means. This is a great thriller and I enjoy reading thrillers, but most thrillers are just that. They don't really get me thinking and they don't really blow my mind. *shrugs*  IN CONCLUSION  Overall, I did enjoy reading this book. This is a very thrilling series and this book is even more fast-paced than the last one! This sequel is definitely worth reading!
