I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It is by far the best 'Christian' fiction I have read. It is deep in meaning and thought. It is also rich in humor.

This novel is refreshingly real. It was compared it to C.S. Lewis and said to come up short. This is not meant to be a scholarly work, it is fiction meant to reflect real life and real people. The characters are not stereotypical in any way. As a preacher's wife, I deal with people like this day in an day out. These are the believers and the unbelievers. These are the scholars and the simple folk. If you have never met people like these, you have a limited circle and you need to expand it!

I am elated that is book has been re-printed. I called my local bookstores years ago and purchased all the copies I could find! I absolutely agree with the other review to ignore the Publisher's Weekly's negative review. Don't be put off if you aren't a born-again Christian. Turner's novels are wholesome, clean, and fun! You will laugh, you will cry, you will feel warm inside. And, you might even gain some valuable insight about yourself. I read this book in 1995 or 1996 when it was first published, and I loved it! The characters are absolutely delightful. The story is uplifting and inspiring. This is the first author I have wanted to write and praise for their awesome work! Her books are the type you read slowly, just so they won't end! I have diligently looked for her subsequent novels and have read each one. It is precious how they are a "new" story, but some of the same characters are still around - the focus is just on someone new. If you enjoy inspirational stories, you will love these books. Start with this first one, though, and read them in order, so you can catch the knitting together of lives as only God does so beautifully.

Pay no attention to the negative 'Publishers'Weekly' review, as it represents the response of those who don't know God personally. This story is rich in layers and meaning. Turner's ability to know and portray her characters with depth is amazing. Yes, the setting and characters are simple, every-day people, which is exactly what makes it all the more believable and inspiring for we every-day souls. And yes, God does work in the little parts of their everyday lives, just as I've come to learn He does in mine.
