Gracefull, descriptive writting. Excellent use of regimental histories, soldiers diaries, correspondence, etc. was Catton's ground-breaking contribution to Civil War literature. This, and Catton's other books, served as the introduction to the subject for many (now senior) Civil War buffs such as I. Strongly recommend this classic.
