It is amazing the things that this book opens our eyes to. What some people will put off as somebody just being "them," I never realized that it was a form of abuse. I am glad that I found this book and you will too. I'd also recommend that you buy "When God Stopped Keeping Score," which takes an inspiring look at the power of God and forgiveness. It too is on sale here on BN as a paperback and a Nook book.

This book definitely struck a nerve. I started reading it and it made me realize I was suffering even more than I realized from childhood emotional abuse. I cried all day, but I didn't feel alone or hopeless anymore because I realized it wasn't just me, apparently a lot of people have issues like this because the list of symptoms all but had my name on it. I am very grateful to the author for letting me know I was on the righg track. However, the book assumes you are still in the verbally abuse relationship. Not so. Also, some of the ways the author recommends dealing with abusers seem unnecessarily confrontational. I can't really picture an abused person videotaping their tormentor verbally abusing them and answering insults with "What did you just say?" Honestly, it seems like a good way to push the abuser over the line into physical abuse. In a section on dealing with negative thoughts, she says when you have a thought like "I'm such a loser", you should deal with it by saying "Erase!". I can tell you from a lifetime of living with a harsh inner critic, pushing the thoughts away like that does not work. Check out Beverly Engel's books instead. She's written a lot of them, and you will find one that fits your situation (or more than one!). I am finding "It Wasn't Your Fault" to be be amazingly helpful. Life-changing, even.
