A bestselling classic of humorous and nostalgic Americana, reissued in a strikingly designed trade paperback edition.

Before Garrison Keillor and Spalding Gray there was Jean Shepherd: a master monologist and writer who spun the materials of his all-American childhood into immensely resonant—and utterly hilarious—works of comic art.

I'm a sheppard fan, and enjoyed this book very much.

Jean Shepherd's mock memoir of all-American teenage and childhood angst crosses generational boundaries as it touches on common themes we all know well - from schoolboy crushes to neighborhood bullies to frugal parents. It's rich in details, from the scent of Lifebuoy soap to the chugging engine sounds of the family Oldsmobile, and packed with homespun humor.

Loved it back in the 60s Playboy. Gene was a master of nostalgia. Miss his humour.
