The novel is very simple, funny, and powerful. Amazingly written, never boring, and never stops affecting you. Anyone with the slightest background in South African history will love this novel

I discovered this book on the shelf in a Cairo hotel and liked it so much I bought a copy when I got back home to America. This is a tragic and magic story. Zakes Mda writes so vividly I could smell the scenes. I highly recommend this book.

I cannot recommend too highly this wonderful book, magically told, which is really (of course) about ways of living. Mda creates word pictures so vivid that when I finally arrived for the first time in South Africa last summer, and visited certain parts of Soweto, I felt like I was returning to a place I had been before.
