Description: This is the third edition of a companion manual to the 23rd edition of Williams Obstetrics, Cunningham et al. (McGraw-Hill, 2010).
Purpose: Meant to be carried in a pocket, it serves as a brief and quick reference on common pregnancy complications. For further discussion, readers are referred to the accompanying chapter in the main textbook. These are decent objectives, but with the advent of smartphones, the need for books such as these is decreasing.
Audience: Residents and students in obstetrics and gynecology are the intended audience.
Features: The book covers all of the information in the more comprehensive textbook. It is a quick reference and when done well, it really sings. A solid example is chapter 40. The twin overview provides worthwhile information with beautiful illustrations and handy charts. It is great for a medical student or resident to access information quickly. Contrast that with chapter 42 on triplets, which boils the information down to a paragraph. The brevity of the book would be better served with more proscriptive information for certain conditions. For instance, the chapters regarding disorders of amniotic fluid volume would benefit from practical patient management. I envision readers wanting to apply material from this book directly to patient care.
Assessment: This is a good companion to its more superior textbook. The issue is that readers who desire specific information may bypass this for heartier resources.
