Although this book was originally written for younger readers, it caught my attention as I investigated the history of Indiana H.S. basketball. After reading The Greatest Basketball Story Ever Told by Greg Guffey, (the actual Milan story that the movie Hoosiers is based on)this fictional story based on actual facts of what Indiana H.S. basketball was all about in the 1940's almost leads one to believe that Tunis had a premonition of things to come. Not only that, Tunis brings out the politics in a small town where the whole community is based around its basketball team. One might tend to believe that Tunis glamorized his story but he actually did move to Indiana for a basketball season and took in much of what was going on. It is thought, at least from what I have read, that Tunis based this book on actual things he witnessed. He was very surprised to find out the dark side of High School basketball during this era. We know that a lot of these same politics still exist today and yet, through it all, the bottom line is that it continues to be about the kids and if adults would just stay out of it, everything would be much better! Yes, Tunis' style truly reflect that he was quite the visionary.
