The Door
Opening the pages of a book opens the pages to life. Something unknown awaits with the turn of each page.
Open The Door and see. Occasionally, every twelve year old boy needs to be rescued from his mother. Chet Baron lives with his widowed mother who has a bipolar disorder complicated by epilepsy. Life for Chet proves difficult to navigate. The early stages of puberty drive him to question his own mental health. Raw hormones bring him to laughter one moment and tears the next. This normal phenomenon leads Chet to believe his thinking parallels his mother’s condition.

Chet’s greatest fear lies in the basement, his favorite sanctuary. A locked door to a room that he has no memory of ever entering grips his psyche. Paralysis describes his physical condition when he wishes to unlock whatever awaits him on the other side. Mysteries, myths, and gossip form a large part of Chet’s personal history. One summer day, his emotions run rampant when his mother has a seizure. Chet’s body, mind, and soul melt down to the kitchen floor. A single phone call renders the custody of Chet to a little known grandfather. Both boy and grandfather are forced to find ways to survive each other’s company and to unravel Chet’s greatest fear.

About the Author

Doug Brown grew up a native Tennessean. Childhood posed a few problems to a boy with dyslexia. Most of his childhood friends never discovered he had learning difficulties since his teachers encouraged him to excel in academics. He did not participate in oral reading after the second grade. As a freshman in high school he chose broadcasting as a profession. After five years of forced oral reading his dream came true. He became a disc jockey for radio stations in Columbia and Jackson, Tennessee; Alexandria, Louisiana; Houston and Dallas, Texas. He left broadcasting to pursue a master’s degree in child psychotherapy. His love of the local storytellers from his childhood led him to begin writing stories. “The Door” is total fiction, but came about from some of his personal struggles as a child. He felt he had no one with whom he could share his difficulties. Perhaps, “The Door” will enlighten some child or parent to the special needs some of us face. Doug resides in Grand Prairie, TX with his wife.
