1. When you imagine a woman trapped in a destructive relationship, what images come to mind? How old is she? Are there children involved? What does she look like and where does she live?
2. Describe our cultural stereotypes about someone who can't leave an abusive partner. How does Leslie compare to these stereotypes?
3. People often assume that low self-esteem is one reason women become ensnared in abusive relationships. Is this what Leslie experienced?
4. Have you ever been in a relationship that seemed to be turning abusive? What were the warning signs?
5. Why do you think some people pay attention to the red flags in romantic relationships, and others minimize or deny them? What was the first warning sign that you noticed in Crazy Love — and why did Leslie miss it?
6. Why do you think Leslie stayed after Conor began physically abusing her before their wedding? Why do you think Conor stayed?
7. Why couldn't Leslie confide in trusted friends or family when Conor became violent? Do you think this is how many women feel in this type of situation?
8. Like many abusers, Conor was a victim himself as a small boy, and he knew personally how damaging physical abuse is at the hands of someone you love. Were you surprised that this knowledge did not help Conor overcome his tendencies towards violence?
9. Statistics show that the most dangerous period for an abuse victim is when they try to leave. Why might this be? How can women and domestic violence advocates use this information to help more victims escape safely and permanently?
