About the Author

Michael E Edmonds MD FRCP is Consultant Physician, King's Diabetes Centre, King's College Hospital, London. A BMA award-winning author (for A Practical Manual of Diabetic Footcare), Dr Edmonds is a world-renowned expert on diabetic foot disease and has lectured throughout the world, giving the inaugural Roger Pecoraro Lecture at the ADA annual meeting. He is Chairman of the Diabetic Foot Study Group of the EASD and has had 66 journal articles published.

Alethea V M Foster BA(Hons) PGCE MChS SRCh DipPodM sadly passed away in January 2011, but was a key figure in diabetic foot disease and the author of multiple books on the topic. She was involved in the development of the UK Government's National Service Framework for Diabetes, implemented in all hospitals, clinics and primary care practices from 2004 until the present day. In 2003, she was the first podiatrist to be awarded the International Diabetic Foot Award, which is only awarded every four years to an individual who has played a pivotal role in developing diabetic foot care.

Description: This is a small, eminently practical handbook that fits in the pocket, thus making it an extremely useful resource on the complexity of the diabetic foot. Now in its third edition, it reflects the changes that have emerged in management since the 2005 edition.
Purpose: This is written very much as a practical handbook that can be used as a ready reference to assist in clinical decision making. It is an ideal book for professionals caring for patients with this problem in a multidisciplinary framework, which is increasingly becoming the trend. The book meets its objectives handsomely and the authors have done a very respectable job of presenting a complex subject in simple and easy to follow steps.
Audience: As stated, the book is aimed at all members of the multidisciplinary team who are involved in the care of the diabetic foot patient. However, the book lends itself to a wider audience, particularly to those in a primary care setting, whether general practitioners or specialists. It also will be of use to residents in many specialties, as well as medical students on a rotation where they may encounter these patients. Michael Edmonds is a well-respected authority on the diabetic foot and has several publications to his credit, including the two previous editions of this title. Sadly, Alethea Foster died before publication of this edition. She was coauthor on the two previous editions and had started work on this edition. She was well respected in the field of podiatry in the U.K. and was a recognized authority.
Features: The book is divided into seven small chapters on managing the various stages of the diabetic foot, as described in the introduction. The book is well laid out, with excellent clinical photographs of the various stages and clinical conditions. Most of the illustrations are in color, with a few well-produced line drawings. There is a nice glossary of commonly used abbreviations, a useful reading list, and a very helpful appendix of differential diagnosis for some of conditions associated with the diabetic foot.
Assessment: This book will inevitably draw comparisons to other titles, such as The Diabetic Foot: Medical and Surgical Management, 3rd Edition, Veves et al. (Humana Press, 2012), or Atlas of the Diabetic Foot, 2nd edition, Katsilambros et al. (Wiley-Blackwell, 2010). These are reputable books, with different styles and certainly heavier tomes, not exactly designed for the pocket. The inevitable comparison must be to Foster's own Podiatric Assessment and Management of the Diabetic Foot (Elsevier, 2006). A little larger than this book, it is still useful, but clearly lacks the recent advances reflected in this 2014 edition.
