Following his bitter divorce at age twenty-six, Alex MacLachlan is socially ostracized by family and friends back East. Heartsick, he travels the world in an alcoholic haze until one day in January 1913 he comes ashore, thousands of miles from home, in Salem, Oregon, a small town with strict prohibition laws. Battling to overcome alcoholism, Alex finds himself befriended by the local doctor and his beautiful daughter Emily, who encourages him to believe that even a man with a checkered past can find forgiveness and a new life.
