About the Author

Once, long ago, K.L. Denman saw a ghost that was very much like the apparition who appears in this story. Although K.L. never learned the identity of her visitor or the meaning of that strange incident, writing The Shade provided her with an enjoyable dip back into the inexplicable. While she hopes never to meet a ghost again, she’s delighted that they and many other mysteries exist. She lives and writes in Powell River, British Columbia.

K.L. Denman has written many novels for youth, including the Orca Currents titles Destination Human and Agent Angus. Many of K.L.’s titles have been listed as Best Books of the Year, and Me, Myself and Ike was a finalist for the Governor General’s Literary award. She lives in Delta, British Columbia.

An instant later, my mind registers this certainty: She is not of this world. My throat constricts, strangling my scream. The choking sound I manage is no more than a whimper. I yank my sleeping bag over my head and hold it tight. Maybe I pant a little in the utter black of my cocoon. What is she doing? The sweat oozing from every pore on my rigid body itches. Has she gone? I strain to hear something, anything, over the roar of my blood. I wait for a very long time.
