How Your Discount Works

How do I get my discount when shopping in stores?

To receive your discount, simply provide your Member Card at the register. Your discount is automatically applied to all valid purchases.

In stores, the 40% Member discount off the list price cannot be combined with other discounts. For example, a B&N Hardcover Bestseller, with a list price of $25.00 will be discounted at 40% off to $15.00 for Members, irrespective of whether there are additional discounts listed against the book's list price.

The 10% Member discount will be applied after all other discounts and deductions have been applied to the purchase, except for coupons or where otherwise noted (coupons will be applied after the Member discount.) For example, a DVD discounted at 20% off the list price to all customers will be sold at an additional 10% discount to Barnes & Noble Members. In other words, a DVD with a list price of $40.00 and a 20% discount will be sold to all customers for $32.00. Barnes & Noble Members receive an additional 10% off for a Member price of $28.80.

See Member Program Terms and Conditions for more information.

Your Privacy

What does the Barnes & Noble Member Program do with the information I provide? Is it distributed to other companies?

Your privacy is important to us. Please refer to our privacy policy, available here and at Barnes & Noble Stores.

I want to take advantage of the Member benefits, but I don't want to be placed on a mailing list or receive unwanted emails. Can I become a Member and be assured that does not occur?

After you enroll you may select to opt out of all B&N communications. Please note, however, if you elect to do so you would miss out on Member-only special offers and discounts, an exclusive benefit of Membership.

How can I opt out of receiving email or direct mail offers from Barnes & Noble?

You can opt out of email offers by following the directions to unsubscribe at the bottom of every email message we send. You may also call Member Services at 1-866-238-READ.
You can opt out of direct mail offers at the Customer Info desk at any Barnes & Noble Store by requesting that your direct mail preference be updated on your Member profile. You may also call Member Services at 1-866-238-READ.

Why am I not receiving any promotional emails or special offers from Barnes & Noble?

There are a number of reasons why you may not be receiving emails from us. Here are the most common:

  • Emails are sent to the email address provided at the time of your enrollment into the Member Program, when you provide your email address in stores, or when you create an account at BN.com. Therefore, the email address on record in your account profile may be out of date, incorrect or invalid.
  • Your mailbox could be full.
  • Your server may be busy.
  • Your ISP could be blocking Barnes & Noble communications.
  • We may have removed you from the active mailing list due to several failed attempts (bounce back) of communicating to your specified address.
  • You or your ISP may be using a "spam" filter that inadvertently blocks the legitimate emails you have subscribed to.

What should I do if I am not receiving emails and would like to receive them?

Click here for instructions on how to sign up for Member communications.

If you have already provided your email address you may contact Member Services at 1-866-238-READ to confirm the address we have on file. If your email address is correct and re-entering it does not seem to help, your Internet Service Provider (ISP) may be using filters to prevent unwanted emails from reaching your inbox. Sometimes, these filters also block messages you want to receive. In most cases, adding us to your list of trusted senders will solve this issue. In AOL, select "Add Address"; in Yahoo! Mail, Outlook or Outlook Express select "Add to Address Book"; or Hotmail or MSN, select "Save Address(es)".
  • If you use a "spam" filter, check your preferences to make sure you have not inadvertently flagged emails from the "@bn.com" domain as "spam."
  • If your problems receiving email persist, please contact your ISP's technical support department and ask how to "whitelist" emails from BN.com.
