Registration

1. Do I have to register my NOOK Tablet™?

Yes. You must register your NOOK to a Barnes & Noble account so that you can purchase and download NOOK Books, magazines, newspapers, and apps from the NOOK Store™ and read them on your NOOK.

2. What is a Barnes & Noble account?

You can create a Barnes & Noble account by providing an email address and password on BN.com. You can also create one directly on your NOOK during the registration process. A Barnes & Noble account, with a default credit card, lets you shop for NOOK Books, magazines, newspapers, and apps. Having a Barnes & Noble account also allows you to synchronize your NOOK Tablet with other NOOK devices and other NOOK Applications you might have, such as NOOK eReader software applications installed on your iPad®, iPod touch®, Android Tablets, PC, Mac or Smartphone (iPhone® or Android phone).

Your Barnes & Noble account is ready for use once you have set up the following:

-An email address
-A default credit card number
-A valid expiration date for the credit card
-A current U.S. billing address

If you have any questions about setting up an account, please call Customer Service at 1-800-THE-BOOK (1-800-843-2665).

3. How do I register my NOOK?

Turn on your NOOK and follow these steps:

1. Enjoy the introductory video.
2. Review the Terms of Service, and tap Accept.
3. Select your Time Zone, and tap Next.
4. Connect to a Wi-Fi network.

NOTE: To register your NOOK and to purchase and download books and periodicals, you must be connected to a Wi-Fi network. You may connect to your home Wi-Fi. If you're in a Barnes & Noble store, your NOOK will connect automatically to Barnes & Noble's free in-store Wi-Fi network. If you're in some other location with Wi-Fi access, your NOOK will list all the networks it finds. Tap on the name of the network you want to connect to. If you see a lock symbol beside the network's name, it's a secure network. You'll need to enter a password to connect to that network. If you do not know the network password, ask the network administrator for help.

If you already have a BN.com account:

a) Enter the email address and password for your account.
b) Tap Submit.

If you do not yet have a BN.com account:

4. What should I do if I'm having trouble connecting to Wi-Fi or registering my NOOK?

If you are experiencing any problems connecting your NOOK to Wi-Fi or registering your unit, first, please click on the following link www.nook.com/tablet/update to download the latest software update for NOOK Tablet. It's easy, just follow the step-by-step instructions on that page.

Connectivity

1. What is Wi-Fi®?

Wi-Fi is a generic term used to describe wireless Internet access. A Wi-Fi enabled device (such as a computer, laptop, mobile phone, or e-reader) can connect wirelessly to the Internet if it is in range of a wireless network. Wi-Fi enabled devices connect to the wireless network through access points (or hotspots). Access points can be public (such as at a library, restaurant or bookstore) or can be private (such as at home, work or school).

Public Wi-Fi access points usually don't require a password, but instead require a user to acknowledge terms of use.

Private Wi-Fi access points are usually password protected. Home Internet connection is usually provided by a cable or telephone company, and the wireless access is provided by a small device called a wireless router that is physically connected to the Internet.

2. Is my NOOK Tablet wireless?

Yes, your NOOK has built in Wi-Fi allowing you to connect wirelessly to any Wi-Fi hotspot. Connect to your home Wi-Fi, as well as your office, cafes, airports, hotels, and most other public hotspots. Your local Barnes & Noble bookstore offers free Wi-Fi that your NOOK will connect to automatically.

3. I forgot my Wi-Fi password. What should I do?

Check with your Wi-Fi network administrator, or with whoever installed your Wi-Fi network. If you can't find that person, you may need to reset your Wi-Fi router back to its original settings. Please go to the support site of your Wi-Fi router's manufacturer for information about factory reset and how to set up a network. Note that you may need to reattach any other Wi-Fi enabled device if you change the network name (SSID) or change the password.

4. How do I know what my home network is?

If you have another Wi-Fi enabled device, try looking at its settings to determine which Wi-Fi access point it is connecting to. Once you've determined that, select the same wireless network name from the list provided by NOOK.

5. I don't see my home network on the list. What should I do?

It is possible that your network was set up as a hidden network. To add your network:

-Go to Settings.
-Select Wireless.
-Make sure that Wi-Fi is turned on
-Scroll to the bottom of the Wireless Networks list, and select the item labeled Other Network.
-Fill in the information for your network and press Save.

6. What is the lock symbol next to a Wi-Fi hotspot listed in available wireless networks?

The lock symbol represents a secure Wi-Fi network. Be sure to have the password and security information for any secure Wi-Fi network that you attempt to connect to.

7. What should I do if I'm having trouble connecting to Wi-Fi or registering my NOOK?

If you are experiencing any problems connecting your NOOK to Wi-Fi or registering your unit, try this first: turn off Wi-Fi, and turn it back on. This will refresh your wireless connectivity to your device.

If you are still having issues, click on the following link www.nook.com/tablet/update to download the latest software update for NOOK. It's easy, just follow the step-by-step instructions on that page.

11. Why is it taking longer for some of my NOOK Books, magazines, apps and NOOK Kids' books to download?

17. How do I get back to my NOOK Video library when watching a movie or TV show?

To return to your Library when watching a video, tap the middle of the screen to bring up the Video tools. Tap the back arrow button in the upper left corner to return to your Library.

18. My device is running low on storage. How can I remove movies and TV shows from my Library?

If you have downloaded a video and you would like to remove it from your device, select the movie or TV show you want to remove and choose the 'Remove from Device' option from the product details page. NOTE: Removing a title from your device will not permanently delete it from your NOOK Library. Your purchases are stored in the NOOK Cloud for future access. If you choose to stream or download this title again at a later date (before the rental period expires for rented content), you can do so at no additional charge.

19. Why does the movie or TV show poster art appear gray in my Library?

When the poster art appears in a gray color, this means that the device does not currently have an internet connection and the gray titles have not been downloaded for offline playback. If a device is not connected to the internet and the title poster art appears in color, this means the title has been downloaded and is available for playback without an internet connection.

20. How do I add more storage to my device for downloading movies and TV shows?

You can add more storage to your NOOK Tablet by inserting a microSD card. NOTE: If a microSD card is inserted and you start downloading a video, the title will automatically be downloaded to whichever storage location has the most space available - either the internal storage location or the microSD card. If you remove your microSD card from your device, video files on the card won't be accessible for offline playback. You will need to reinsert the card or re-download content to the onboard device storage to watch those videos offline.

21. I'm having trouble downloading my movies and TV shows to my NOOK Tablet. What do I do?

In order to download movies to your device you must keep the NOOK Video App running and connected to a Wi-Fi network for the duration of the download. It is recommended to connect your device to a power source when downloading content to your NOOK Tablet.

22. How do I enable closed captioning in the application?

You can enable closed captioning by selecting the closed caption option in the NOOK Video application settings menu. NOTE: Closed captioning may not be available for all titles.
