Rita Mae Brown's Favorite Mystery Novels:
Ellis Peters wrote the Brother Cadfael series and A Morbid Taste for Bones is a mystery that once read stays with you. Even if a reader evidences no interest in the Middle Ages, this story of a warrior's bravery and love stays with you long after the book is put back on the shelf.
In college (New York University), simply to escape Milton I read Murders in the Rue Morgue which sent me to The Purloined Letter. Apart from his unique voice, I attribute some of Edgar Allan Poe's view of things to his having been a student at the University of Virginia.
Dorothy Sayers' The Nine Tailors is one of the cleverest mysteries I have ever read. It is completely original and I don't want to give anything away. Sayers' Gaudy Night is also arresting most especially because it presents a suffragist before women writers wrote about such things in fiction. It is subtle and erotic and hard to beat.
Sneaky Pie's Favorite Mystery Novels:
Tee Tucker's Favorite Mystery Novel
Pewter's Favorite Mystery Novels:
Sometimes I read the mysteries like Three Hands in the Fountain about Marcus Didius Falco by Lindsey Davis because they are the perfect size for me to turn pages but really the best mystery will be the one I write when I decide to do so. And with no help from Rita Mae or that insufferable tiger cat.
