The protagonist is named Hiro Protagonist, which makes me smile. The opening extreme-pizza-delivery sequence is still one of the best first chapters I've ever read. And so much of this book, published in 1992, is coming true (or has come true) that it's kind of scary.

My Life as a White Trash Zombie
Simply awesome. Rowland has done something masterful when you can't help but root for the zombie Angel to get all the brains she wants. This is a great character who has to become a monster before she can become a better human.

The Name of the Wind (Kingkiller Chronicles Series #1)
The prose, people. Oh my goodness, the prose! This is fantasy lit chocolate. Lots o' people have already read this by now, but if you haven't, DUDE. You must.

Honestly, anything by Neil Gaiman. I even like the books he writes for little kids. But what got me started was The Sandman series he did for Vertigo Comics, which reads like literature. Mr. Gaiman is the author that all the other sci-fi and fantasy authors squee over, myself included.

Dreadnought (Clockwork Century Series #3)
Most people who know Priest's work have read Boneshaker, the first book in her Clockwork Century series, but if I had to pick a favorite of the series it would be this one. It's American Steampunk - an alternate Civil War setting with some pretty horrifying zombies thrown in. What's not to love?

Usually everyone is all OMG NEUROMANCER when it comes to Mr. Gibson, but my first experience with him was this book, and I have read everything he's published since then. You might enjoy starting here too, especially if you've never tried Cyberpunk.

For Love of Mother-Not (Pip and Flinx Adventure Series #1)
Mr. Foster is one of my all-time favorites. He writes both sci-fi and fantasy, series and standalones, and I've read a good chunk of them. The first fantasy novel I ever read was his Spellsinger, in fact. This is a great introduction to his most popular series, Pip & Flinx, set in his Commonwealth universe. It follows the adventures of an empath, Flinx, and his mini-dragon, Pip.

Without a doubt my strangest reading experience ever - and one of the coolest! It's a master class in the show-don't-tell school of writing, because he throws out alien words and concepts but doesn't explain anything. I spent the majority of the novel confused yet couldn't stop reading, and about halfway through I thought, how did he do this to me? I should have given up a long time ago! It does come together eventually, however, rather marvelously. The future Rajaniemi created is fascinating and actually imbues one with a feeling of culture shock.

Leviathan Wakes (Expanse Series #1)
Like The Quantum Thief, this sci-fi adventure contains itself to our future solar system, which makes it more plausible to me than most sci-fi. Great characters and lots of action - you're going to love it. The sequel, Caliban's War, is every bit as good.

Dragonsinger (Harper Hall Trilogy Series #2)
In today's market, this would probably be classified as YA, and I first read this as a young'un, but I still read it today - like once every year or so. This is the second book in McCaffrey's Harper Hall trilogy and I've never tired of Menolly's rise to journeyman because we all wish to be recognized for our talents.
