Overview

Meet the Hutterites—a small religious colony in rural Montana who holds desperately to their sacred traditions while fighting the modern temptations of the outside world. King Colony is made up of 59 people and they are almost all related. This family lives together, works together, and worships God together, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, for their entire lives. And, like any family, this one doesn’t always agree. Most of the colony is holding tight to the age-old traditions of their ancestors, while others are flirting with modern society.

The Hutterite men are disappointed that their cows are underweight and won’t bring in as much income this year, but despite the setback, the colony prepares for its annual Harvest Party. Concerned about her daughter’s behavior, Bertha dredges up tragic memories of her late husband, who battled with depression and eventually committed suicide. It’s a day King Colony will never forget, as the elders bar Bertha and Rita from doing their colony work, going to church or eating with the rest of the colony. Hutterite tradition says that children should drop out of school earlier to help on the colony, but Bertha and Rita think this tradition is tired, so they broke it, and are now paying the price. Tensions rise as Carver becomes angry that he is being told to leave school, and pain is deep as Bertha and Rita experience their worst days on the colony.
