Overview

The representative work of an internationally acclaimed author, Youjung Lee! At first glance Moolchi is just another shy, unassuming boy whose greatest talents are running away from bullies and binging on vitamin supplements. Then one day, Moolchi's absentee father sends him a most unusual gift—a stunningly-proportioned automaton. She calls herself "Six" and mumbles about having a "prime directive." This strange and exquisite creature quickly turns the boy's life upside-down, violently disposing of high school hooligans and anybody else who gets in his or her way. The word "oblivious" barely does him justice as Moolchi remains blissfully unaware of his father's dangerous double-life, or the cute hall monitor who harbors a crush on him, or the intentions of this mysterious femme fatale who insists on bathing with him. Meanwhile, ominous storm clouds gather on the horizon, and one lingering question looms above the others "who is this so-called "Zero" that everybody is looking for?

    A Boy and his Android

Zero/Six is a Korean Manhwa by Youjung Lee combining action, comedy, and even a little bit of drama. Moolchi is a bit of a high school nerd...one of those poor souls who finds himself constantly picked on and abused at school. Moolchi does his best to laugh along with his tormentors but deep down you know that he is hurting both mentally physically. But the abuse not only comes from his fellow students, but even some of his teachers, including one crazy teacher who looks...and acts...just like Hitler. Then one day a large package arrives for Moolchi. Inside is a girl...a life-size doll, or so Moolchi believes, with lifelike hair, teeth and skin. But this is no dummy. While examining the gift with his friend, the girl springs to life and attacks Moolchi's pal. They soon learn that this creature is an android sent to Moolchi by his estranged father. Its name is number six, Jong E. Her prime directive is to protect unit 'zero'...namely Moolchi! But the gift starts to become more than Moolchi bargained for as Jong E follows Moolchi to school and later dispatches a gang of bullies in abrupt and violent fashion, much to Moolchi's horror who is against violence. But whatever he does, he cannot seem to shake the android for long...even when he takes a bath and is joined by the gorgeous, dark-haired machine! But why did the father send this to Moolchi? Was it just to protect him from schoolyard bullies or is there a more sinister threat? I quite enjoyed Zero/Six. The art was very good and Jong E is quite beautiful. It's somewhat hard to have sympathy for Moolchi as he becomes quite abusive to Jong E when he tries to get her to stop following him. After all she's just following her programming. It will be interesting to see where the story evolves from here. Reviewed by Tim Janson
