Overview

The manufactured stars of the reality-TV show Making the Band, O-Town follow up a multi-platinum debut -- and the eclipse of boy-band pop -- with O2. Soft-pedaling their pedigree as a product of former Backstreet Boy and 'N Sync manager Lou Pearlman's boy-band hit factory, the guys have matured vocally and have taken more creative control, with Erik (not the guy from CHIPs) Estrada co-producing one track and several group members co-writing nearly half of the album. Musically, O-Town still take cues from 'N Sync, whose 2001 Celebrity featured an edgier mix of rock, pop, and R&B. With songs such as the hip-hop-flavored "Favorite Girl," written and produced by rap star Nelly, and the dance-driven tracks "The Joint" and "Girl Like That," O-Town make their own brand of dirty pop. Still, no O-Town album would be complete without its share of power ballads, and O2 tugs on the heart strings with the TRL-destined "These Are the Days" and the Erik and Dan Miller duet "I Showed Her." With the fate of other popular boy bands obscured by solo ventures and personal foibles, O-Town are poised to take over the spotlight with their evolving pop sensibilities. Elsa Gallazzini
