This discount-priced sampler of ten of the chart-topping hits from the 1930s on labels that came to be controlled by CBS -- and now Sony -- contains material that mostly originated on Brunswick Records. The selection accurately reflects popular music as whole in the decade, which was dominated by dance bands led by musicians who are all but forgotten today: Ted Fio Rito, Freddy Martin, Horace Heidt, Leo Reisman, Hal Kemp, Frankie Masters, and Little Jack Little. The selection accurately reflects popular music as whole in the decade, which was dominated by dance bands led by musicians who are all but forgotten today: Ted Fio Rito, Freddy Martin, Horace Heidt, Leo Reisman, Hal Kemp, Frankie Masters, and Little Jack Little. Many of the songs, however, remain standards, such as "Stormy Weather," "There's a Small Hotel," and "I'm in the Mood for Love." There are exceptions, such as solo singers Bing Crosby and Ethel Waters, but for the most part these are largely instrumental recordings taken at a medium dance tempo and played sweetly, with an uninvolved male tenor taking a choral refrain. The music has a harmless, effervescent quality that must have countered the hard times being experienced outside the ballroom. And it worked; these were the most popular contemporary renditions of these songs.
