"INSPIRING, MOTIVATING, & A BOOK YOU'LL TELL ALL YOUR FRIENDS ABOUT-10-10-10"

I have been reading a lot of great comments from people on Twitter (and TwitterMoms Network) that have been mentioning how inspiring Suzy Welch's "10-10-10" book was, and when it came out this week-I rushed right out to pick one up.

Normally, I've got enough going on in my life with work and family, that rarely can I pick up a book and finish it in the first night (which I did with 10-10-10). You simply cannot put the book down.. Welch engages you with stories of love, hope, and promise (with her husband Jack and kids) as well as with real true life stories from people who use 10-10-10 in their daily lives to great success. By the time I was done with the book, I was resolved to the point that starting tommorrow- I would be using 10-10-10 in my life to give reasoning to choices at work, home, and with my family.

It wasn't long before my daughter chose to neglect finishing her Spring Break homework in lieu of spending the weekend at a friend's house. We sat down and used 10-10-10 to decide what would be the most rational and reasonable answer to this dilemma. In 10 minutes, we both agreed, she might still be mad, but she knew the homework needed to be done and that she could visit her friend anytime-and the homework had a dealine. In 10 months from now, most likely she would have visited her friend many times over and this issue would become a non issue. In 10 years from now-frankly, neither of us would probably remember it. Thank you Suzy for adding reason, responsibility, and value to our world...awesome book!

more than your typical self-help book

Got this after seeing Suzy on the Today show. I loved her conversational voice -- her magic is in the fact that she isn't afraid to admit times she struggled and made mistakes. She lays it all on the table so lucidly that you can't help identify. I found myself laughing at the stories about raising her kids. Much more enjoyable read that I thought. I've also started using 10-10-10 to sort out the relationships in my life and it is making such a difference!

    I Also Recommend:

    Great Concept!

It really makes the point of the title: look at the problem (any problem) and predict what life will be like with your decision in 10 minutes, 10 months or 10 years from now. It's great for parenting problems, money problems/solutions, and relationship dilemmas. I'm giving my copy to a good friend who is experiencing all of these issues.

    snooze

Although the 10-10-10 concept is reasonable and perhaps helpful, this book is a big letdown. I wish I had known the 10-10-10 concept prior to purchasing this book - I would have used it to determine that reading this book is a waste of my time! In the next 10 minutes - I could have saved my money, in 10 weeks - I may think of the concept once and in 10 years - I will have forgotten this book completely. It's a piece of fluff with very little substance.

    Easy Read

This book encourages the reader to take a 3 step perspective when evaluating a problem. 10 minutes-10 day-10 years, before jumping into a situation. It can also be 10 minutes-10 days- 10 weeks, just as easy. Looking at your problems from all angles can help you make a better decision.

10-10-10 Is for the Young and Inexperienced

This book is just fine for people under the age of 50. I am giving this book to my daughter because at my age, I can't look forward 10 years to the future. Besides, who cares.

An easy read with a message

I liked the concept of 10-10-10. It was easy to read and I did enjoy the examples that were illustrated in the book. It does hit home regarding decisions that we make. My father always taught us that we are the decisions we make. This book had a similiar theme. Ten minutes, ten months, ten years didn't have to be taken exactly, but the concept of looking at the decisions in that time frame to see if they hold the test of time.

Change the Way You Look at Life Decisions

I have had Suzy Welch's new book, 10-10-10: A Life-Transforming Idea (Scribner, ISBN 978-1-4165-9182-5), for a few weeks now and have been reading it diligently but knew that the review was going to get written today, whether I had my personal example for you all or not. I wanted to truly try the 10-10-10 process before recommending the book to anyone. I could see it working in any life decision, especially with the personal examples that Welch gives in the book, but wanted to be sure.

I immediately sympathized with Suzy Welch at the beginning of her book as she was trying to balance way too much work, way too much motherhood. It is a position I think all mothers get in, with or without thinking. We want to be sure that our children see what we value in life so we spread ourselves so thin that the next decision may literally push us over the edge. Welch has a method for making decisions that should prevent us from that reaching that precipice. The same process can be used in making business decisions and can be taught to our children to prevent them from making the mistakes - or learning life experiences, as I once called some of the mistakes - we made in finding our way.

In the decision making process that is the heart of 10-10-10, one should look at decisions through a multi-tiered lens. How will life be ten minutes after the decision? How about ten months? How about ten years? Now, as Welch says, these are arbitrary times but represent now, the close future and the distant future. In some decisions, this may be 10 minutes, 10 days and 10 months which is the way I dealt with my decision.

I had been presented with a new client. My gut instinct was that I could not do what the woman was looking for in a virtual assistant. Then, I allowed myself to be talked away from my initial reaction. I suggested to the potential client - who was really not looking to pay me my worth for the projects she was proposing - that I try a small project for her so we could both see if we were a fit. Upon finishing the project with a few difficulties but nothing unsurmountable, I let the potential client know I was done. In the course of two days, I had suddenly received eight emails from her. I knew I needed to take a long look at what her product was and what her project was.

Should I take on this client? was the start of my 10-10-10 process. Because I knew that the client would not last ten years, I processed through the lens of 10 minutes, 10 days and 10 months. In ten minutes time, I would be fine. Not much would change but in ten days time, I anticipated the expectations of myself and my new client would exceed the monetary value of the project. In ten months time, I was sure I would be disgusted with myself for having taken on the client as I needed the monetary relief and I would not be working as well as I should due to my dislike of the project. My decision was made.

I started working for myself to have control over my time and my life. This project would not fit in my area of expertise nor in the time frame I am looking to work. I may not have come to this conclusion without looking at the project through this lens.

I strongly recommend that you all think about purchasing Suzy Welch's 10-10-10: A Life-Transforming Idea.
