Overview

Glen Campbell first made a mark for himself in the music business as a session musician, playing guitar for everyone from Elvis Presley to Frank Sinatra, but when he finally connected as a headliner, he became one of the biggest acts of the '60s and '70s, a performer who fit as comfortably on country radio as on pop. Campbell recorded some of the most satisfying and mature pop hits of the era, especially in a series of singles written by Jimmy Webb, including "By the Time I Get to Phoenix," "Wichita Lineman," and "Galveston," and those three tunes are all included on this collection. As the title suggests, 10 Great Songs only offers a brief sampling of Campbell's recorded legacy, but it includes several of his best and biggest hits while offering a few surprises, including his playful version of "Bonaparte's Retreat," and a fine cover of Jackson Browne's "These Days" from the 2008 album Meet Glen Campbell. If you're looking for a comprehensive single-disc collection of Campbell's hits, 2003's All the Best is probably your best bet, but 10 Great Songs does indeed live up to its title, and is a solid budget-priced sampler from a fine and often underrated artist.
