Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
Library Media Connection

Life stories of inventors and their inventions will come to life in this highly readable graphic format. Reluctant readers will be drawn to the graphic novel-style illustrations and text bubbles.

Booklist

Cousens draws on a comics artist’s tool kit of furrowed brows, strong chins, craned necks, and dramatic perspectives to infuse his sharply drawn gallery of inventors at work with attention-grabbing intensity. Readers attuned to the visual punch of superhero comics and graphic novels will be drawn by the look of the pictures, and will likely stick around to meet some important-to-know figures in the history of science and technology.

School Library Journal

Each section offers a succinct yet thorough biography of the inventors. Striking graphic-novel-style art is a visual aid to draw readers into each setting and era. Life-link boxes connect the inventors to one another. In this way Gifford demonstrates how they influenced, or were influenced by, other great thinkers. With the appeal of a graphic novel, and clear language, this title will draw in reluctant readers and provide enough information for brief reports.

Voices of Youth Advocates

[An] accessible and fast-paced graphic novel. A good book for middle school students learning about inventions and needing quick facts or biographical information.

VOYA - Sarah Cofer
Ten notable inventors from ancient civilization through the 1900s are highlighted in this accessible and fast-paced graphic novel. Famous inventors like Archimedes, Edison, Franklin, and Galileo are featured alongside lesser-known names such as Sergai Korolev, the chief designer of the Vostok rocket, and Glenn Curtis, father of naval aviation who built the first successful seaplane. Others include James Watts; Nikola Tesla; Isambard Kingdom Brunel, who changed nineteenth-century transportation with is majestic ocean liners; and Marie Curie, the only female scientist mentioned, who discovered the element radium and was the first woman to win the Nobel Peace prize. Each inventor's life is sketched out in short biographies that read more like stories. The biographies include dates, colorful illustrations, and quick facts to highlight each inventors' education, key life events, invention milestones, and setbacks. "Life Links" connect each subject in succession, revealing chains of influence such as Galileo and Edison both working with lenses and James Watt's improvements to the steam engine paving the way for Brunel's ocean liners. It is a good book for middle school students learning about inventions and needing quick facts or biographical information, but it lacks source notes, bibliographies, or further readings. The colorful and eye-catching graphic novel format might inspire pleasure reading, but the best audience will be students completing homework assignments. Reviewer: Sarah Cofer
School Library Journal
Gr 4–8—The innovative efforts of nine men and one woman are presented here. Some of the names will be familiar (Galileo, Franklin, Edison, Curie) while others will prove less so (Isambard Kindgom Brunel, Glenn Curtiss, Sergei Korolev). Starting in ancient times with Archimedes, the chronology ends in modern times with Korolev, a Soviet-era rocket designer. With the appeal of a graphic novel, and clear language, this title will draw in reluctant readers and provide enough information for brief reports.—Anne Chapman Callaghan, Racine Public Library, WI
