10 Little Sock Monkeys

Overview

Ten little monkeys swinging on a bar; two let go and didn't fall far. It's a jungle gym in here, for 10 sock monkeys having a swinging time. Two by two, these increasingly popular and adorable creatures drop away, while all the rest continue to play. They're posed in exuberant, energetic positions, waving their arms, bodies upside down, and flying around. And when they're on the ground, they manage to keep on swinging, dancing, and bopping in their own special way. Kids will ...

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
On the other hand, the numbers decrease in the photos of the paper-over-board 10 Little Sock Monkeys with photos by William Winburn. A comical full-spread photo of the 10 on the monkey bars becomes eight with the turn of a page, after two "let go and didn't fall far." All 10 eventually wind up "swinging!" to the rhythms of a sock monkey violinist when they reunite on the ground in the final spread. Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.
Children's Literature
In this fun book-version of the 10 Little Monkeys song, the monkeys are made of socks and are photographed swinging on a monkey bar. The ten monkeys are all created with different expressions and clothing to make them look like a schoolyard of kids playing at recess. Each monkey is positioned differently, either hanging by his tail, sitting on top of the bars, flying through the air, or sitting on the grass. They drop off two at a time, while the remaining monkeys are photographed in a new position. The repetitive lines and familiar song will have children reading along with the book and laughing at the comical positions of the monkeys. As the two remaining swinging monkeys drop off, the book ends with all the monkeys swinging in a new way to the tunes of a violin playing monkey. Overall, kids will enjoy being able to read this book on their own from a very young age. Additionally, the book teaches children basic math subtraction skills with the engaging sock monkey puppets. 2005, Sterling Publishing Co, Ages 2 up.
