Overview

Poignant, funny tales about a man and his dog—and the lessons learned about responsibility and enduring friendship.

It is love at first sight when Carlo De Vito, an aspiring book editor, first meets Exley, the rambunctious, rescued German Shorthair Pointer he adopts and who becomes his faithful companion. In 10 Secrets My Dog Taught Me, De Vito writes about their experiences growing up together—and the life lessons that invariably result from their adventures. Ultimately, when his beloved friend is gone, De Vito discovers some truths about love, loss, and lasting friendship.

"It had been Exley's job to raise me. All that time we had been having fun, going for walks, getting into trouble, being companions and friends in some great adventure. And I had spent so much time teaching him to sit, stay, lie down, roll over. But all along, he had been teaching me. It is the child that makes the man, and in this case it was a dog. All along it had been the dog doing the teaching, not me. How do you like that? And I love him for it to this day and will for the rest of my life."

Writing in the heartwarming, bestselling tradition of Pack of Two and My Dog Skip, De Vito captures the spirit of that tie in a way that will resonate with not only dog lovers, but all those who share their heart and home with a pet.

There Are Angels Among Us.....and they have four feet, a cold nose and a wagging tail.

Yet another sentimental book that extolls the love we share with the fur-laden members of our families.....but if you're like me, neither another one or twenty of these accounts is ever too much.

DeVito's loving words and recollections of his friend Exley easily illicits the memories of those that have loved and lost their own furry children. Smiles, laughs and tears will sweep your face as you read his words and privately reminiscence about the dog that once shared your life. Though my life is currently blessed with two pups that I would not trade for anything, while reading this book my thoughts frequently traveled back to the time I shared with my pup who is now passed, and that lump in my throat that once choked my breath away came back for an unwelcomed visit. My last night with her, sitting on the floor with her for hours, rubbing her velvet ears, my eyes flooded with tear as I told her what a good dog she had been, interspersed with whispered "I love yous"....it came back and washed all over me again. In the last days, and especially those last hours, came the realization that not only was she a spirited, yet gentle soul, but she was also a noble being, a word I had never used before. I also realized how much I had learned from her. Yes, it's true, if the heart is receptive, we can learn from the beings that share our lives, even if they have four legs, a cold nose and a wagging tail.

Read DeVito's tribute to his pup. Open your heart to your own. Instead of learning the lessons that are there as your pup leaves this physical world, observe and feel; then learn what you can in the living years.

A book well worth the read. You will smile, laugh and cry at the canine antics, especially if you own a dog(s) or have done so in the past. Even if you don't own a dog or never have, you won't want to put this one down. My daughter read it in an evening. My husband, who doesn't have much time for reading, picked it up and enjoyed it thoroughly. He is now making time to read. We have had many canine friends in our family for many years (currently have 4) and we would not want to be without even one!!!

    I love my dog

If you have a dog in your life now or have had a special one in the past you will be able to relate and appreciate this book. We are all here for a reason and this includes our doggie friends. Makes you stop and pause and agree that you share many experiences with others who love their dogs.

10 Secrets My Dog Taught Me

I loved every chapter of this book. The author has a delightful way of describing the every day joys a dog bring to one's life. Then he sums up everything at the end of each chapter. It was hard to put the book down at night. Luckily, it is short.

    Heartwarming Story

I decided to buy this book because I too have a German Shortahir Pointer. The book brought both laughter and tears to my eyes. I have been around many different kinds of dogs throughout my life but not one has compared to my GSP. She is the best dog I have ever owned and she is both loyal and affectionate and GREAT with kids. This book lets you see the wonderful personality these dogs have. It's worth getting especially if you own a GSP.

Even better than Marley & Me

Even better than Marley & Me -- should be on the NY Times best-seller list! Terrific writing, engaging story-telling, a uniformly good read, all from a writer who really knows dogs.

Satisfying, engaging, funny, warm and real

This is a fantastic read! The author recounts how his dog helped him mature and traverse through a variety of life defining stages. I believe 10 secrets predates 'Marly and Me,' and I feel Carlo Devito's examples, reflection and writing are FAR more intersting and touching than those in 'Marley and Me.'

    Great read for dog lovers!

I just had to read this book! I own a GSP also and they are the greatest dogs-energetic but not against a soft couch or bed when they are tired, goofy, and very mischievous! Dog owners are simply the luckiest people in the world and this book shows you why that is true!

    GSP Love Story

I loved reading this book. I am a german short hair pointer owner and can relate to the bond between dog and owner. My GSP is my best girlfiend and companion. I found alot of the GSP qualities of Exley in my dog, Maggie. The comical, mischevious, loyal and loving relationship has bought alot of joy and love to my life. This book makes you realize the short time a dog is with you and makes you know the important factors in a true, loving relationship. Relationships with a human or animal is precious and should always be cherished!
