Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
This book celebrates South Africa's first decade of democracy by highlighting 100 contemporary artists selected by 15 writers and curators who also contribute artist introductions and commentary. The result is a fascinating survey of the vibrant South African art scene that includes mature, mid-career, and emerging artists in all media. The introduction is made up of critics' and/or curators' appraisals of early 21st-century South African art in cultural, political, racial, and international contexts. Four pages are devoted to each artist, including a one-page introduction and color plates. An encyclopedic time line from 1989 to 2004 chronicles important events, exhibitions, conferences, awards and commissions, publications and films, galleries and organizations, shows abroad, and deaths. While these artists are known and respected within South Africa, information on them is scarce in Europe and North America. This successful compilation will give them the wider recognition they deserve; recommended.-Russell T. Clement, Northwestern Univ. Lib., Evanston, IL Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.
