The most extraordinary aspect of alpine skiing and snowboarding is where it happens. There you are, swooping down a north face in one of the world's great mountain ranges. On the best days, the sun tails you like a yellow kite. The temperature hovers above freezing.
There are no bad days. Every one of us can be the best skier on the mountain, because the best skier is always the one who has the most fun. That's the lesson of skiing. In the grand scheme of things, skiing matters not one iota. Most people live just fine without it. But some of us cannot. For those who love to ski and snowboard, the best ski resorts in the world tempt and teeter us on the edge of nirvana. There are thousands of ski resorts. Most of us didn't begin skiing by flying down the best resorts in the world. But adventure on skis doesn't always depend on the size of the mountain.
My own downhill pleasures started at a mom-and-pop-run rope tow called Rabbit Hill. The name says it all, a few dips and dos hopping along the river valley on the ranchlands that form the eastern slopes of the Canadian Rockies. After a day of skiing at Rabbit Hill, my friend Jim Hunter, who grew up to dominate the Canadian National Men's Alpine Ski Team, would strap his skis to the roof of his dad's pickup, climb into his ski boots, step into his skis and ride a downhill racer's crouch while his dad tore down the highway heading for home....
