Overview

This 2015 box set from Deutsche Grammophon is a five-CD collection of short excerpts and single movements from the best-known classical works. Like most labels' greatest-hits compilations, perennial favorites are included, such as the Allegro from Vivaldi's "Spring Concerto," Bach's "Air on the G string," Pachelbel's "Canon," Beethoven's "Für Elise" and the Adagio sostenuto from the "Moonlight Sonata," Orff's "O Fortuna" from "Carmina Burana," Handel's Largo from "Serse," the Adagietto from Mahler's "Fifth Symphony," and many more of the most popular pieces, in performances drawn from Deutsche Grammophon's extensive catalog. While this package can help listeners identify familiar melodies in a relatively short span of time, it may actually be more helpful in acquainting them with the great artists who have recorded for Deutsche Grammophon over the decades, including Claudio Abbado, Martha Argerich, Daniel Barenboim, Plácido Domingo, Carlo Maria Giulini, James Levine, Seiji Ozawa, Maria João Pires, Sviatoslav Richter, and many more who have achieved legendary status. Because the selections date from 1964 to 1996, there is a mix of analog and digital recordings that are slightly variable in quality, though the remastering has helped smooth out any minor sound differences.
