Overview

Designed as a ready-reference and biographical source for educators and young readers, this book offers a more current and affordable alternative to multivolume publications. Fascinating profiles of 100 of the most beloved and celebrated picture book authors and illustrators are accompanied by photos, reading lists, and lists of related information sources (such as Web pages). Contemporary authors and illustrators whose works are still in print provide the focus. A great collection development tool and a resource for author studies units, this book will also be in demand by students for reports.

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
McElmeel, a former library media specialist and now an educational consultant, has produced this latest entry in the publisher's "Popular Authors" series. Her introduction explains that the 100 writers and illustrators were selected primarily by 3000 teachers and students responding to a survey; Dr. Seuss was the number one response. In sifting through the results, McElmeel attempted to reflect the diversity of children's literature as well as current trends. Alphabetical entries run about four to eight pages and are quite current (noting recent deaths); they consist of a biography (often with a photo) followed by a "Books and Notes" section. Here one finds brief introductory comments, a selected bibliography, and sources for more information, including web sites. Other recent titles using a similar format, such as St. James Guide to Children's Literature (St. James Pr., 1999) and The Eighth Book of Junior Authors and Illustrators (H.W. Wilson, 2000) cover more authors (about 800 and 200, respectively) and accordingly have shorter entries. Given its currency, this work will nicely complement Gale's Something About the Author. McElmeel offers an attractive and useful addition to the existing bio-bibliographical reference works in children's literature. Recommended for public and school libraries.--Katie Sasser, Bowdoin Coll., Brunswick, ME Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.
