Description: This is a comprehensive overview of overactive bladder (OAB) and urinary incontinence written for the general public. The question and answer style is a powerful tool to deliver the information to the public and retain interest. The strategy of quoting statements made by an "insider" regarding her experience as a nurse and a patient brings life into the book.
Purpose: The authors intend to educate sufferers of OAB and urinary incontinence about the evaluation and management options available, and empower them with the knowledge they need to seek help and actively participate in their own care in an effort to improve their quality of life. It is through such education and empowerment that sufferers will know that their problems are not the "mere result of growing old" and that they can be helped. The authors have done a great job delivering this message.
Audience: The authors target the general public and more specifically patients suffering from bladder problems. Both authors are well known urologists with expertise in the field and they were successful in writing a book that speaks the language of their audience.
Features: The book starts by covering the basics on bladder function and control, then moves on to cover overactive bladder and urge incontinence in detail, concentrating on evaluation, medical and surgical management. Finally, it covers the evaluation of stress urinary incontinence and provides an updated overview of its management. The question/answer style, the glossary, and the quotes from the urology nurse are great tools to deliver a dry medical topic to patients. Despite using some illustrations, the book would benefit from more illustrations, especially when it comes to the description of the surgical procedures.
Assessment: This is a well written book that could become an important education tool for patients suffering from bladder control problems that will empower them with the knowledge they need to seek help and participate in their own care.
