Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Katie DeWald
Did you know that snakes use their tongues to smell, that some nocturnal animals take a few naps in the daytime rather than sleep the whole day, and that crocodiles make loud noises at night to attract a mate? These are just some of the hundred facts about all types of nocturnal animals you will find in this volume of the "100 Things You Should Know About" series. The one hundred facts are numbered throughout the book and each two-page spread is given a title such as "Death by stealth," "Bright eyes," and "Quick and curious." Readers will learn about night-loving insects, sea animals, reptiles, owls, birds, marsupials, primates, rodents, bats, wolves, and other nocturnal creatures. The book is filled with fascinating photographs and life-like drawings which add to the interest and understanding of the text. A helpful index and table of contents are included. Brightly colored text boxes peppered throughout the text serve to help the reader interact with the text, learn more about the subject, and apply their newfound knowledge of animals of the night. Readers will be intrigued by the catchy series title, captivated by the amazing illustrations, and enthralled by the nighttime behaviors of all types of animals from aardvarks to flashlight fish to sloth bears. Gr 4–6—Quick, interesting facts designed to fascinate readers are the basis of these thin books. Readers used to obtaining information in quick bites from the Internet and DK's "Eyewitness" books will not be disappointed with them. An average of six numbered facts appear on each spread, and most are accompanied by a colorful photograph. Activities, brain teasers, and quizzes are scattered throughout to provide additional information. The sharp, clear illustrations will draw in casual readers, and the array of facts will hold their attention.—Christine Markley, Washington Elementary School, Barto, PA
