Whether she's singing a stripped-down cover of Bruce Springsteen's haunting ballad "Stolen Car," picking up the pace on the jaunty "Chief," which features Griffin on resonator guitar and producer Doug Lancio on mandolin, or assaying some full-throated Spanish on "Mil Besos," the focus is on Griffin's wonderful voice. Mournful, with a country-catch in the middle, it's a beautiful instrument that can sound a bit like early Shawn Colvin, a bit like Emmylou Harris who sings harmony on "Long Road Home". On "Tomorrow Night," the old R&B standard that Bob Dylan has also covered, Griffin balances easygoing swing with bittersweet longing and plays some nice blues guitar to boot. Griffin's no slouch as a songwriter -- the Dixie Chicks, Bette Midler, and Reba McEntire have all covered her songs -- and the prayerful "Be Careful" and the wistful "Rain" are among her best. But it's that voice that makes 1000 Kisses so seductive.

Patty Griffin's third album, her first material to be released since 1998 the absorption of her former label, A&M, in the Polygram-Universal merger left an album Griffin cut in 2000 in the vault, where it's sadly likely to stay, strikes a stylistic middle ground between the stark voice-and-guitar approach of her debut, Living with Ghosts, and the eclectic textures of Flaming Red. 1000 Kisses was mostly recorded live in the studio with a small acoustic band, including Doug Lancio on guitar and mandolin, Brian Standefer on cello, Giles Reeves on vibraphone and percussion, and Michael Ramos on accordion; the feel of the performances is close and intimate, with the occasional cough or footfall audible in the background, and these sessions capture more than a bit of the cinéma vérité mood of Living with Ghosts. But if the album's production style is subtle, it's also a superb match for the material, and without forcing their hand, Griffin and the musicians can sway from the life-on-the-street swagger of "Chief" to the Latin romanticism of "Mil Besos" to the torchy late-night blues of "Tomorrow Night" without missing a step, finding a broad emotional spectrum in these low-key sessions. And while 1000 Kisses finds Griffin blending covers in with her own compositions for the first time, she proves to be a first-rate interpretive singer her version of Bruce Springsteen's "Stolen Car" actually improves on "the Boss"' original, and her own songs are splendid, especially the moving widow's lament "Making Pies" and the moody lead-off track "Rain." And regardless of who wrote the material, Griffin's voice -- a tower of strength capable of expressing remarkable emotional vulnerability -- remains a wonder to behold. 1000 Kisses finds Patty Griffin at the top of her game, and one can only hope we don't have to wait four years for the follow-up.

    Beautiful

    It is rear to have an album where almost every cut is a beautiful gem, but this is such an album. Patty Griffin is a wonderful artist and she crafts a sonic (and lyrical) picture that never fails to draw you in.

    It all comes together!

    My roommate loves Patty Griffin and this CD was always playing on our stereo. I never sat down and really listened to it, but always loved humming along with the choruses and melodies. Now, after purchasing my own copy, there is no doubt about it: Patty's voice is perfect. It can be husky (the end of Tomorrow Night... so sexy and gorgeous and sad); it can be joyous (the line "I wish that you could see me when I'm flying in my dreams..." ); it can be filled with pain (the last acapella chorus of "Wishin' Well"). This woman is amazing. But beyond that, it's what she writes: the words and phrases that are in her lyrics. For me, Patty is the perfect combination of two of my favorite singers: Patsy Cline and Joni Mitchell. Her lyrics are simple but filled with imagery (Wishin' Well is a perfect example of that) and her voice is such that you get every inch of that imagery. This woman is a goddess!

    1000 Kisses

    I thought this cd would be good, it's not....it's EXCELLENT. The more I listened the more I realized what a jewel it is. It's intelligent, honest, original, and perfectly executed. I can't bring myself to take it out of the changer or play anything else.

    1000 Kisses

    Bought this cd after reading the gushing of her fans re: her earlier works. HOLY MOLY! It's so honest, real & powerful while being as delicately translucent as a butterfly wing. It's FABULOUS in the purest sense. This is a cd that'll make the travelin' team, baby. Par excellent! For him who has ears to hear, this is the real deal...

    One of the best

    This album quickly became one of my favorites (of all time). I hate to single out tracks when they are all so superior, but Long Ride Home is my favorite and Making Pies cannot be overlooked. This is a recording with great ''heart''. You will probably enjoy it if you are open to having your emotions evoked. Like many great albums, there is diversity here but somehow there is a cohesive whole.

    Heartfelt and Sincere ... and Breatakingly Beautiful!

    Have you ever heard the BLUE album by Joni Mitchell? ... It is just so REAL - right? ... Well, this album by Patty Griffin is just as heartfelt and sincere - and breatakingly beautiful. I have NEVER before in my life woke up singing a song I could not get out of my head as much as I have with Making Pies - a song that was written about the Table Talk Pie company. Every time I hear this song, I think of my uncle, and his friend, Chris - the Table Talk Pie delivery man - who used to deliver the fresh-baked pies to my uncle's restaurant every day. ... The WHOLE album is like this! ... It's just very magical, and rich in imagery - and man, WHAT a VOICE this woman has. ... You will NOT be able to get these songs out of your head! You will be singing them softly - and OUT LOUD - to yourself for MONTHS! ... YOWZA! - The Aeolian Kid

    Beautiful and powerful

    All Patty Griffin fans were thrilled for the release of her third album... and I think we were all blown away with the soulful power that Patty delivered once again on 1,000 KISSES. Patty's sad and heartfilled voice is so beautiful that it will draw you into every song on the album, and her simple yet intricate lyrics will keep you listening over and over. Patty has become one of my favorite lyricists in recent years, and this album has proven that she belongs at the top of everyone's list. Her cover's of ''Stolen Car'' and ''Tomorrow Night'' showcase her ability to recreate a classic and make it even more memorable. You will not be disspointed with this collection of songs...
