It's the phenomenon: 1,000 Places to See Before You Die has 2.2 million copies in print and has spent 144 weeks and counting on The New York Times bestseller list.

Now, shipping in time for the tens of millions of travelers heading out for summer trips, comes 1,000 Places to See in the U.S.A. & Canada Before You Die. Sail the Maine Windjammers out of Camden. Explore the gold-mining trails in Alaska's Denali wilderness. Collect exotic shells on the beaches of Captiva. Take a barbecue tour of Kansas City—from Arthur Bryant's to Gates to B.B.'s Lawnside to Danny Edward's to LC's to Snead's. There's the ice hotel in Quebec, the Great Stalacpipe Organ in Virginia, cowboy poetry readings, what to do in Louisville after the Derby's over, and for every city, dozens of unexpected suggestions and essential destinations.

The book is organized by region, and subject-specific indices in the back sort the book by interest—wilderness, great dining, best beaches, world-class museums, sports and adventures, road trips, and more. There's also an index that breaks out the best destinations for families with children. Following each entry is the nuts and bolts: addresses, websites, phone numbers, costs, best times to visit.

The 'go to' book for US and Canada travel.

Coming on the heels of her NYT best seller '1,000 Places to See Before You Die,' Schultz'latest book is my new best travel friend for US travel. Not only is it great for vacation planning, but it is really terrific for planning 'day trips.' I have lived in the tri-state (CT, NY, NJ) area for 25 years and I am having a blast discovering new places. Schultz includes all the specifics...location, best times to visit, contact info, etc. Also, I have given this book as graduation gifts, party gifts, thank you gifts...and I am ALWAYS greeted with 'Wow, I have seen this and have been meaning to get it!' I am a B&N member, so the price is perfect. Enjoy!

    I Also Recommend:

    Good book

I personally love to travel. It is nice to have a book with great ideas for places to go, or great things to do where I choose to go. With something in every place it is a good starter to have a fun time no matter where you are going!

    I Also Recommend:

Patricia Schultz' New Book on the US and Canada

Patricia Schultz has followed up her best selling book 1000 Places to See Before You Die which took her over 12 years to research and write, with another best seller focusing on sites in the United States and Canada.

1000 Places to See Before You Die in the US and Canada has over 1100 pages that cover sites in the 50 United States and 14 provinces of Canada. Additionally there are a dozen indexes for cross referencing based on interest rather than simple geography. If you're interested in active travel and adventure, Schultz' has an index that organizes lists of sites from the book into 14 sections that include biking, fishing, dog sledding, climbing, horseback riding, ice skating, rafting, sailing, skiing, surfing, swimming and tennis. There is also a "culinary experiences" index, a "great golf" index and a "take the kids" index.

The core of this book was comprised of the 150 sites that Schultz included in her first book which covered the entire planet Earth. The words "1000 Places" in the title of this book is slightly misleading. Readers will be pleasantly surprised to find that several locations are frequently folded into one of the 1000 mentioned sites. For example, one of the 1000 places identified in the book is "Garrett County Maryland", but in that one entry, Shultz mentions riding rapids down the Youghiogheny, Deep Creek Lake, Wisp Ski Resort, an organic farm in Oakland, and seven state forests and parks. She begins the entry, "The far western tip of Maryland packs more outdoors options into one single county than any other in the state."

Just as I thought there was much in Maryland she didn't cover, many will say Patricia Schultz didn't get some of the best sites in their home states and territories. But it was her project, so I respect her choices. The book is a perfect resource for an individual or family taking a road trip that covers several states. If you're traveling through South Carolina and Georgia on your way to Florida, Schultz offers choices and alternatives to zooming through states without a second glance. This makes road trips far richer. Her indexes allow the traveler to focus specifically on areas of personal interest as well as geographic locations.

As far as Ms. Schultz' coverage of my home state - Maryland, I'm impressed that one of the 13 sites identified in our state was Crisfield and Smith and Tangier Islands... my home area. The islands are always worth a visit, being the only inhabited off-shore islands in both states. My only gripe was that she referred to Crisfield as "sleepy." What is it with these travel writers - and the use of "sleepy" when referring to a town?

Small does not equal sleepy. Brick sidewalks, historic facades, working waterfronts, sailboats and friendly people do not denote "sleepy". Sleepy is almost as tired and overused as quaint, charming, breathtaking, exotic and jewel. None of these cute words merit adjective status when describing Eastern Shore towns.

1000 Places to See Before You Die - US and Canada is worth every bit of the $19.95 retail price. Just the information on one or two new places to discover covers the price. The book is one of few guide books that will become a staple in the travel-bag of American tourists that have a penchant for wandering and discovering when they take to the road.

    Great Book!

I have this book and the international one. Both of which give great information on destinations that are a must see. I haven't used this one as much as the international one but plan on taking a trip southeast and catching up on the must see areas.

This book has lots of information on different places to visit, see ,and things to do.

I did not buy this book for myself. It was a retirement gift for a friend at work. I flipped through it before giving it to her and it seemed very interesting, and entertaining. I saw some places that looked interesting to visit, and some places I had already been. I think this would be a good choice for either an arm chair traveler or someone who wants to take a short trip or a few short trips. It is easy to find a place to visit and not have to spend a whole week in one place. It looked like a good read. I hope my friend is enjoying it anyway.

1000 Places To See In the USA and Canada is a book which is not only a great travellers reference ,it is also truely entertaining and should be on everyones Christmas wish list. There are destinations in everyone's price range.I love the fact that both the well known and obscure places are described and having been to a number of them, the descriptions are accurate.I have found '1000 Places' to be invaluable during my travels, and look forward to using it in the future.

    An absolute must!!!

I have traveled much of the world but very little of the United States, so I was so excited to see this new book come out. I was thrilled to find areas so close to home that sound so interesting and require only a day-trip or weekend excursion. There are also destinations, such as the scenic West Coast, that I would love to devote a longer expanse of time. I felt that the books layout was easy to navigate and there was a nice variety of destinations, eateries and activities. Some that are givens and others that are hidden treasures. My favorite part of this book is the list of Festivals around the country...what a great idea and how fun!

    USA and where?

I was extremely disappointed that the book makes simply a token gesture of inclusion for Canada. To talk about 1,000 places to see and then to relegate Canada to a mere 3 mentions per provinces is rather insulting. We have a vast, varied, and beautiful country and trying to pick just 3 things per province as noteworthy would be truly impossible if an author were to truly make an effort to explore our land.
