Overview

From the unique 10th-century manuscript of Beowulf to Sylvia Plath's poem “Ariel,” this beautifully illustrated book presents the panorama of more than 1000 years of literature in English through original manuscripts from the British Library's unparalleled collection. In addition to manuscripts of some of the most celebrated literary works in English, such as Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, Charlotte Brontë's Jane Eyre, and Virginia Woolf's Mrs. Dalloway, the book reproduces poems, romances, short stories, novels, letters, and diaries by Malory and Shakespeare, Swift and Pope, Coleridge and Wordsworth, T.S. Eliot and Dylan Thomas, to name just a few of the 100 authors here.Presented in large color reproductions, the manuscripts offer fascinating insights into the world of the writer at work and often reveal major corrections made in the course of writing. Chris Fletcher's engaging text provides an overview of each author's life, writings, and times and explains the significance of the manuscripts and their importance to understanding the works. From the grandest of narratives to the slightest of couplets, the manuscripts represented here provide a vibrant and immediate view of English literary history.

Author Bio: Chris Fletcher is a curator of literary manuscripts at the British Library. His previous publications include a biography of Joseph Conrad in the British Library Writers' Lives series.

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
This visually arresting book traces 1000 years of English literature through essays and reproductions of original literary manuscripts from the British Library's superior collection. Fletcher, who is the library's curator of literary manuscripts, adeptly arranges the 100 featured authors (e.g., Chaucer, Shakespeare, Coleridge, Wordsworth, T.S. Eliot, Virginia Woolf, and many others) by chronological periods and provides the reader with meaningful historical and biographical information. He also provides a short but satisfying overview of each author's life, influences, and body of work and enhances the book's appeal with drawings, portraits, photographs, and color reproductions of the manuscripts. Moreover, there are actual samples of authors' handwriting, corrections, doodles, and notes on drafts. Collectively, these offer an intimate view of the authors' thoughts and personal composition processes and provide insights that could not be obtained through mere description. Awe-inspiring and animated, this lavish collection is a treasure that any library would want to showcase. Highly recommended for public and academic libraries.-Colleen Lougen, Mount St. Mary Coll.
