Editorial Reviews

VOYA
Describing itself as a "stylish, fact-filled celebration of the noteworthy and the notorious," this visually appealing coffee-table book is loaded with illustrations, provides brief sketches of famous people from the past thousand years, and covers diverse disciplines such as politics, science, the arts, and sports. Although the book has strong visual appeal, it fails to explain the criteria used in selecting the "noteworthy and the notorious." Was there an attempt to balance entries either historically or geographically? The lack of explicit criteria makes the selections often appear arbitrary, and close inspection of some categories reveals some curious choices. The sole Canadian politician to merit an entry, Mackenzie King, is credited with keeping "the English- and French-speaking states of Canada united." The Canadian "states"? Furthermore, why does King deserve mention but not Pierre Trudeau, who repatriated the Canadian Constitution and established the Canadian policy of official bilingualism? The sole contemporary artist included is an unusual choice, British shock artist Damien Hirst. Although broadly based books such as this one inevitably result in some strange bedfellows, it is a bit disturbing to find Osama bin Laden categorized along with Al Capone, Bonnie and Clyde, and David Berkowitz. Despite its attractive design, this browsable book contains some glaring typos, which suggest the need for more careful editing and fact-checking. The introduction promises that the book will help readers "understand the private lives, driving passions, and towering achievements that have shaped our world today." It ultimately fails to deliver. This book might be a helpful first stop for thestudent seeking a name for a biographical study, but there are many more useful biographical sources available in both print and online formats. Index. Gr 4 Up-A thousand years and well over a thousand people are included in this volume. It is organized into 10 thematic chapters, such as world leaders, explorers, scientists, writers and reformers, musicians and dancers, movers and shakers, and sports stars. Within each section, the biographical sketches are organized chronologically by date of birth, which makes the progression quite logical. The emphasis is overwhelmingly Western, focusing almost exclusively on European and American individuals; however, the book does include many lesser-known figures of historical note, especially in the areas of science, invention, and exploration. The majority of the profiles are under 100 words in length, highlighting the person's contribution to world history. The design is excellent, with lots of useful full-color illustrations and archival photos; the volume is strengthened by a simple and comprehensive index. Overall, this is a good, solid addition that would make a handy ready-reference source. The range in coverage is interesting-from Mahatma Gandhi to Timothy McVeigh-and the presentation and writing are well done.-Laura Reed, Pickering Public Library, Ontario, Canada Copyright 2003 Cahners Business Information.
