As you know, he is a conscientious student. But he seems to be overwhelmed by the workload and specifically the amount of time he spends on homework.
He comes home from school and sometimes spends as much as two hours a night on homework, and then he worries whether he should do more. I believe he brings on much of this pressure himself, but I need your help in getting him to understand that he is doing well and does not have to be so hard on himself.
I'm sure we agree that we don't want to discourage a good student with a great deal of potential, but we also want to allow a young child to enjoy school and his life outside of school.

My son Brian is a student in your fourth grade. We have been looking forward to meeting you during parent-teacher conferences next month.
However, I would like to ask for an appointment in the coming week to discuss with you a matter that is causing us a great deal of concern.
When we moved to Fairview over the summer, Brian left behind a number of good friends and was quite apprehensive about starting in a new school. We spent a considerable amount of time assuring him that when he started school he would find new friends and fun things to do.
However, from the first day of school we found that Brian was having a problem with several children in the class who have chosen to tease him constantly. Brian comes home quite upset every day and does not want to go back.
I am sure you would not tolerate such behavior if you were aware of it; we hope you will intervene now. We would like to meet with you to discuss the best way to deal with this problem.
Knowing my son as I do, I am sure that given a chance he will fit in and do well.

Dear Dr. Murphy:
I am writing to request that my son Brian be transferred to a different fourth grade class and that we meet to discuss conditions in his classroom.
Brian has been the subject of nearly constant teasing from some of the other students in Miss Smith's classroom and it is making him miserable and unable to learn. The problem began right at the start of the school year. I have been in contact with Ms. Smith by letter and in a meeting two weeks ago, but the problem has not been resolved.
It is now a month into the school year and Brian is still the target of the other children. I am asking that Brian be placed in another classroom immediately so that he does not fall farther behind in his schoolwork.
We specifically chose this town because of the excellent reputation of the school district. I am disappointed that an elementary school teacher could not settle a problem as basic as one child being cruel to another.
I look forward to hearing from you very soon to set a meeting and to discuss his new classroom assignment.
