Library Journal
Beyond the glass pyramid in the heart of Paris lies a collection of art in a variety of departments, some well known and some that remain hidden in the shadows. This work, which deals with painted objects in every department of this treasure house, allows us to see into these recesses without ever having to leave home. Scholarly essays introduce the pieces in each department, which range from Oriental antiquities to Egyptian, Greek, and Roman art; Islamic arts; all European paintings; and the graphic and decorative arts. Erich Lessing's excellent photographs are reproduced in sumptuous color, offering the reader another look at the familiar and the pleasures of discovering something new. Along with Sassetta altarpieces and Botticelli's Portrait of a Youth, one can find illuminated manuscripts, Roman frescoes, S vres vases, and magic papyri. The artistic experience is similar to a week spent probing the widespread wings of the Louvre on a tour conducted by the keepers of the objects. A visual and intellectual feast, this would be an excellent resource in any art library collection and, as an armchair trip abroad, could not be any better.
