    Learn the important tactical patterns

1001 Winning Chess Sacrifices and Combinations provides the reader with a wide variety of different tactical motifs which is a great way of improving pattern recognition. The different motifs are broken down by type of motif (i.e. Knight Forks, X Ray Attack, etc.). When added to 1001 Brilliant Ways to Checkmate and Winning Chess Traps you will get a well-rounded sample of all of the important tactical patterns that an advanced beginner or average experienced player should learn. There are some misjudgments (errors) in the solutions, where there is a better move that was overlooked! This is as common as in about 1 in every dozen problems in this book. This along with the old form of chess notation (descriptive) is why it isn't a 5 star book in my opinion.

    Good Tactics Workbook

For an intermediate level player, who has a solid grasp of the basics, 1001 Winning Chess Sacrifices and Combinations will provide a wide variaty of problems to work on. Sections of the book are broken down by type of tactic. Other than some mistakes in the analysis (better moves overlooked in the solution) this is a great book to improve tactical skills.

    Helps you improve your tactics

This is perhaps Fred Reinfeld's most helpful and best known book. 1001 postions taken from practical play that contain important tactical patterns are provided for the reader. Simply a fanstastic workbook that is guaranteed to sharpen your knowledge of tactics. A couple drawbacks now: The answers in the back are in english descpriptive notation and there are some errors in the answers. But, still a very worthwhile book to own.

    Excellent Tactics and Combos

Excellent for improving your tactics and combinations. Uses old style notation and can be somewhat confusing if you're not familiar with it. Does not anotate the solution, but just gives the solution. You have to figure out for yourself why the solution worked and why other tactics did not.

Alot of Chess Fun For the $

This book is a tactical goldmine which presents problems at all levels of difficulty. While the notations for the solutions are not algebraic, this is not much of a hinderance. I agree with the previous reviewer that it is best used if you try to do the problems rapidly. This will help recognition in quick chess situations. For under 10$ it is a bargain.

'Sac, sac, mate!' R. J. Fischer!

This venerable book on chess sacrifices and combinations should be in every serious chessplayers library. While I don't agree that it's the 'best book' for learning sacrifices and combinations, I do think you will gain tatical insight by studying this book. CAUTION!!! Before wasting this book learn what the various tactical motifs and patterns are first. A deceased FIDE Master wrote a chess improvement course back in 1998. He put this book, along with it's twin, 1001 Ways To Checkmate, in the Class B section. Rightly so. In the Class C, D/E and below sections you'll find about 90% of the books are on tactics. You have to know WHAT to look for before you can use something like this book. One could say these books go hand in hand with Bruce Pandolfini's books but that's wrong. Pandolfini writes more for the weaker classes. This one is for people who have some fairly good idea of what to look for. TIP. Try solving 20 in five minutes! DO NOT LOOK AT THE SOLUTIONS! Keep this up at the rate of about 100 puzzles a day. Then do it all over again. If you're still having problems I suggest you look at the books listed below. If you do it right you'll find you are a much stronger player. CAUTION. Don't spend all your time on tactics. STUDY THE ENDGAME!!! 1001 Winning Chess Sacrifices and Combinations. Highly recommended!!!

This excellent book is a bargain!

This book is outstanding. Tactics are the foundation of good chess. This book has great tactical exercises to help sharpen your ability to visualize pins, forks, skewers, hidden attacks, etc. Easily the best chess book I have read . It is easy to read and high yield. Your game will improve for sure.
