Can there REALLY be 101 MORE favorite and MEANINGFUL play therapy techniques? The answer is yes—for the book editors have selected ones that are more than contributors' favorites. They are techniques that will either provide play therapists with variations on basic methods for use with children who present difficult challenges to the therapist, or offer some entirely new directions. The insightful introductions and rationales provided by the contributors are worth reading in their own right. Meet the Author

Heidi Gerard Kaduson, PhD, RPT-S, specializes in evaluation and intervention services for children with a variety of behavioral, emotional, and learning problems. She is past president of the Association for Play Therapy and co-director of the Play Therapy Training Institute. Kaduson has co-edited many books and maintains a private practice in Monroe Township, New Jersey. Charles E. Schaefer, PhD, RPT-S, is professor emeritus of psychology, Fairleigh Dickinson University, Hackensack, New Jersey. Schaefer is cofounder and director emeritus of the Association for Play Therapy and a fellow of the American Psychological Association. Among Schaefer's sixty-five books are the outstanding Handbook of Play Therapy and The Therapeutic Use of Child's Play, both of which have become classics in the field. He maintains a private psychotherapy practice for children and their families in Hackensack, New Jersey.

    I read this book to try and spark some more ideas to use in therapy. I found that the book had 16 out of 101 things to suggest. Some of the techniques were advertisements for equipment in the therapy room or skills the therapist should learn (eg. sewing, magic, balloon sculpting) rather than actual techniques. Many techniques were very similar and were not distinct enough from each other to require a different chapter (1 chapter= 1 technique). Finally, much of the evidence that was provided for a give technique's effectiveness in therapy was the subject experience of the person that wrote on the technique rather than basis in what is known to be effective or research. Though a knowledgeable clinician can tease out the wheat from the chaff much of the book's space could have been used better. I am glad I did not spend money for the book.
