Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

"Easy to use and filled with many great 'why didn't I think of that' ideas. The piggyback chant and song activities are dynamic and lend themselves equally well for use by the beginner, as well as, the veteran searching for fun and innovative ways to incorporate music/instruments into their daily curriculum. This book is a must-have resource for any early childhood classroom teacher or music teacher/therapist." - Stephen Fite, musician and President of Melody House

"What fun! Abigail Flesch Connors' 101 Rhythm Instrument Activities for Young Children offers teachers and children a wonderful alternative to experiencing music through singing alone. The movement, rhythm, and creativity emphasized in this book are essential to the early childhood experience -- and that's only the start of what children learn from these clever activities." - Rae Pica, Author of Teachable Transitions and Wiggle, Giggle, and Shake

Children's Literature
Designed for early childhood educators, this instructional manual provides an easy-to-use format for introducing preschoolers to rhythm and its many variations. In the introduction, the author—an early childhood specialist herself—states that the goal is to respect and satisfy children's need to make noise while gently guiding them toward expressing themselves musically. She notes that rhythm instruments are an especially good learning tool to reach that goal. The book contains selections of fun activities that involve several different kinds of simple rhythm instruments; some activities are the author's original creations, while others are adapted from well-known songs and stories. Chapters are devoted to outlining exercises for specific instruments, including rhythm sticks, shakers (maracas), jingle bells, and sand blocks. An additional chapter combines rhythmic activities for cymbals, triangles, drums, and tambourines. Most exercises are intended for children aged three to six, but the author also devotes a short chapter to working with toddlers as young as 18 months. The book also contains a chapter titled "Rhythm Band Activities," which outlines fun, rhythmic exercises that children can enjoy as a group. Three indexes are included: a standard index, another that divides the activities by season, and a third that lists them by subject. The book also contains monthly planning pages for teachers. 2004, Gryphon House Inc, Ages Adult.

    OK

This book is OK, not so much for music teachers. It could be useful for classroom teachers. I bought it expecting more application for my music classroom with 3 & 4 year olds in the preschool use.

Great addition to my preschool music library

I first found this book at the local library. I have checked it out so many times that I decided to add it to my personal library! The introductions to rhythm instruments are wonderful for my 3 and 4 year old preschool music classes. This book goes way beyond your everyday rhythm stick beat. I can't say enough about it!
