Meet the Author

Vernon Winterton has been cooking in Dutch ovens for thirty years. He is one of the founding members of the GreaterWasatch Dutch Oven Society and served two years as its assistant director.

Vernon has competed in Dutch oven cook-offs for ten years, qualifying three times to go to the world championships. He and his wife, Barbara, also enjoy entering cook-offs on a local level as well.

Mountain Man Breakfast

Dutch oven size: 12-inch

1 pound bacon

1 pound sausage

2 packages frozen southern-style hash browns

(not shredded) 1 container (8 ounces) sour cream

4 eggs, beaten

1 pound grated sharp cheddar cheese

In Dutch oven, brown sausage or bacon. Stir in hash browns and cover. Bake 25-30 minutes at 350 degrees using 10 coals on bottom and 14 on top. Stir in sour cream and eggs and pour over hash browns about 5 minutes before they are done. Cover and let cook 5 minutes, or until eggs are cooked through. When done, remove lid and sprinkle cheese over top. Replace lid until cheese melts. Makes 16-20 servings.
