More About This Book

Overview

12-Step Horror Stories provides detailed, first-hand accounts of harrowing abuse suffered by desperate people who turned to what they thought was a source of help. This book includes numerous tales of 13th stepping, 12-step sexual predators taking advantage of vulnerable, newcomer women; tales of AA gurus using their pigeons as slave labor; tales of individuals driven to suicide by the cruel treatment of their fellow group members; tales of broken confidences and broken relationships; and tales of women raped by other 12-steppers, and then told by their sponsors or home group to keep [their] side of the street clean or even to make amends to their rapists. Knowledge of such things is common in AA-but never revealed to normies. 12-Step Horror Stories makes this knowledge available for the first time to the public-and in doing so, one hopes, will help prevent much unnecessary suffering.

This May Be The Best Thing That Happened To A.A.

Though I haven't actually finished the book, I felt compelled to write this. I feel A.A. has probably been corrupted over the years, and steered away from it's traditions. While I personally have not been subjected to any of this treatment, sadly, some have. It says right in the 'Big Book', 'We are not doctors.', so why are these idiot sponsors telling people to stop taking psychiatric medications? It's alright for them to get a buzz from their cigarettes and caffeine at a meeting, but if someone needs pills to keep from killing themselves, they're 'not truly sober'. I welcome this kind of scrutinization. It was lack of accountability and endless cover ups that are bringing down the Catholic Church, and I'd rather A.A. cleaned up it's own side of the street, or it will cease to exist.

    A Must-Read!

I was amazed and heartened that someone finally had the courage to print the truth about AA, NA, and treatment centers (which are really places where you pay to learn about AA and NA.) Stories about rapes, bad sponsors, bad medical advice, destroyed lives, and people forced to go to rip-off treatment centers are common in the 'Recovery' world, but these facts are rarely made public. The truth is here, told in very plaintive and detailed first person by 44 people who were hurt. Knowing the truth--that 12-step treatment is not all it's cracked up to be--will help a lot of people, like myself. I thought there was something wrong with me when NA meetings, then treatment at a treatment center, did not help my addiction, only made me more focused on it. I finally quit by myself with the support of my family and getting a new job. It's great to know there are plenty of others who are willing to acknowledge they went through the same types of bad experiences and lived to talk about it and be clean and sober without having to spend their lives in those depressing meetings. I feel better knowing it's the 12-step system that failed, not me. 12-Step Horror Stories is the best recovery book ever.
