Cool Counting Books
These may be the coolest counting books ever. Simply illustrated with graphic images, you can count along to 10 with the icons of famous cities, states, and the country.
Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
A visit to the City of Brotherly Love in a board book is a bit sophisticated for the intended audience. The opening image is of a bell with a crack in it. The two gorillas and the three balls along with the word "love" are not necessarily anything a young child would connect with Philadelphia. Even this adult reviewer was mystified until the last spread that explained what each picture represented. (The explanations are in English and Spanish.) The gorillas are from the Philadelphia Zoo, the balls represent the local football, baseball and basketball teams and the "love" statue stands in John F. Kennedy Plaza. While the book is informative and may have plenty of appeal for those who live in Philadelphia, for most kids it will not hold their interest nor will they figure out what makes the items depicted special for the city. Part of a series that features major cities, states and other U.S. locations. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
