Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
In the little yellow house all alone on a hill, a collection of creatures assembles for a big party. After it is over they all depart but the little boy and girl return to call the yellow house "home." The assemblage offers an opportunity to count from one to ten and then backwards from ten to one. The cheery illustrations invite repeated viewing.
School Library Journal
PreS-K--This small-size counting book features one little house; two young children; three little dogs; and an odd assortment of domestic, woodland, and zoo animals. They all show up for a rollicking party and then quickly depart. Ten little monsters, the last to arrive, overeat and leave in evident gastric distress. After all of the creatures are gone, there is only "1 little house all alone." The children return and "make it their home." Whimsical, black-bordered pictures are brightly hued and the objects are easy to count. Otherwise, it is hard to give much of a cheer for this oddly spelled title and nonsensical tale.--Meg Stackpole, Rye Free Reading Room, NY
Kirkus Reviews
All it takes to throw a big party is a houseful of kids, animals, birds, and monsters in droves numbered one to ten; Jahn- Clough (ABC Yummy, 1996, etc.) gets the whole event down on the page. One "little house all alone" opens its doors to two little children bringing tea, three barking dogs, and four balloon-wielding kittens in a pint-sized counting book that moves forward from one to ten and back again, with targeted numbers highlighted in red type on each page. All the creatures cavort in open-armed joy, bearing balloons, cakes, and songs, until the little house nearly explodes with merriment in a central illustration that practically bursts at the seams. "10 little monsters leave full of cake," followed by penguins cooling down and monkeys taking off their party hats. Poster-paint colorsþfull of short strokes, dips, and dabsþfancifully stray outside the outlines. If pictures can sing, these do. (Picture book. 1-3)
