Overview

THE “EXTRAORDINARY” (Booklist) #1 INTERNATIONAL BESTSELLER—THE “HARROWING” (The Washington Post) SURVIVOR’S MEMOIR YOU WILL NEVER FORGET

Aron Ralston, an experienced twenty-seven-year-old outdoorsman, was on a day’s solitary hike through a remote and narrow Utah canyon when he dislodged an eight-hundred- pound boulder that crushed his right hand and wrist against the canyon wall. Emerging from the searing pain, Aron found himself completely stuck. No one knew where he was; no one was coming to rescue him. With scant water and food, and a cheap pocketknife his only tool, he eliminated his options one by one. On the fifth night, wracked by delirium and uncontrollable shivers, Aron scratched his epitaph into the rock wall, certain he would not see daylight.

Yet with the new morning came an epiphany: if he could use the rock’s vise-like hold to break his arm bones, his blunted pocketknife could serve as a surgeon’s blade. . . .

    An amazing true story

After reading this book, the original from 2006 "BaRaaHP", I didn't think of Aron as just another "unprepared" or "rank amateur" outdoors-man. The guy knows his stuff and was just a victim of fate/bad luck/karma... Here it is, another gripe about e-book prices: $11.99 for nookbook is ridiculous. Get the paperback.

    What a journey!

Excellent book. Very, very detailed - sometimes too detailed for the average non-climber who is not familiar with the vocabulary of an experienced outdoorsman. There are a lot of technical climbing and gear descriptions. The chapters alternate between Mr. Ralston's hike during which he got stuck by the boulder and past expeditions. I especially liked the stalking bear story.

    Boring

K its cool he survived and cut off his arm. This book is a total brag fest of how cool he thinks he is. He does not hold back on the language and it is totally offensive at points. Very disappointed......

This story is powerful and inspiring. I could read and re-read it over and over. Even though you know how it ends, this book keeps you on the edge of your seat and reading it becomes an intense expirience. There are no boring parts in this story, i literally couldn't put it down and probly read a good 75-80% straight through.

I would definitly reccomend this book to anyone who loves the outdoors but also to anyone who loves suspense

    What would you do?

Between a Rock and a Hard Place is a tremendous survival story about Aron Ralston. Aron went on a hiking trip by himself in Utah and hot his arm trapped under a boulder. He was trapped for five days and 7 hours until he cut his own arm off in a desperate attempt for an escape.
The most prominent theme is survival and the question “what would you do”? Being that close to death and having to face what you have done in your life and accept that this will probably be the end scares everyone and this book catches that very well. Being trapped by himself for that long, Aron had to keep himself sane and become his own closest friend. He starts to run scenarios through his mind on how he would be found or what he was going to do. A big mistake that Aron made was not telling anyone where he had gone and for how long he was going to be there.
I really like the book because it’s a memoir by Aron and you can’t get closer to the truth than that. For not being a professional writer, Aron’s word choice and writing style isn’t bad at all. . The explanation of how he dismembers his arm is gruesome and realistic and with little left to imagine. The book kept me very interested and hooked throughout. Nothing about this book disappointed me. I have not complaints or dislikes and highly recommend it to everyone who loves the outdoors or just a good read.
With most popular books out right now, the majority are fictional fantasy stories filled with vampires and wizards, Between a Rock and a Hard Place is a breath of fresh air with a true remarkable story that didn’t need to be created. If you enjoyed this book, I would recommend reading Endurance: Shackleton's Adventure or Touching the Void. Both are tremendous survival stories that show how extraordinary humans can be.

    Boring & pretentious

It reads as a series of bragging stories from an irresponsible youth. My least favorite book ever read.

3 stars: inspiring story but not one of my favorite reads

This novel is about the inspiring true story of Aron Ralston¿s survival of 127 hours trapped between, well, a rock and a hard place¿¿literally! While on his trip to Utah, Aron falls into a canyon and his right wrist gets caught between a boulder and the canyon wall. He did not tell anybody where he was going so his chances of rescuers coming to find him were very slim. He had to come up with an ingenious plan to free himself from this mess alive and with limited resources. After 127 hours of being trapped, he figures out a plan, but how he does it is up to you to read about.
127 Hours portrays a global theme that pertains to anyone who wants to succeed in anything in life. Never EVER give up because you will only disappoint yourself and there is nothing rewarding about it. Aron¿s body would probably still be in that canyon if he just gave up on himself. This theme can be used in any aspect of a person¿s life whether it¿s as simple as finishing a project for school or as difficult as trying to survive in some of the worst conditions.
Another theme portrayed through a chunk of the novel is how powerful positive thinking is. When Aron decides that he wants to survive, he is willing to risk anything in order to live another day. Even when he was out of water and food, Aron had the strong will to survive and thought about what he wanted to accomplish in his life that he hadn¿t done yet. His positive thinking and perseverance ultimately led him to survival.
The themes and story are absolutely incredible and I am still in awe of how Aron survived over six days trapped in a Utah canyon. Overall, the story was good because it is so amazing that someone survived in terrible conditions with limited resources. The book is filled with tons of details about his experiences and the beautiful scenery in Utah which I really liked about it. Aron Ralston also threw in some other stories about his other experiences as an outdoorsman which was pretty interesting because of all of the situations that he got himself in to.
Even though this book was very inspiring, it wasn¿t my favorite because of the way it was written. It seemed very jumbled and it was jumping from one place to another really quickly and unexpectedly. It just got confusing in some places because he would be talking about what he was thinking in the canyon and then he would talk about some other random experience that he had. He would also get into so much detail that it felt like it took me 127 hours to finish the book sometimes.
If you enjoy an inspiring story with a universal theme that pertains to all parts of life, then I suggest that you read about Aron Ralston¿s fight for survival in 127 Hours.

    Wow! So intense.

Aron is an inspiration. His extraordinary will to survive is just that, EXTRAORDINARY! Aron is a man who is supremely fit and a risk taker who has done things that most humans can only imagine. The way this book was written is phenomenal, it really puts you into the canyons and mountains alongside him. I could not wait to slide the next page to read what happens next and so on and so on until there was no more reading, I finished the book wanting more Ralston adventures. But his story was gruesome, inspirational, intense, happy, sad and a relief. Read it and see what a human body can go through while facing danger and death. A great read!
