All Music Guide - Heather Phares
13 Going on 30 -- a romantic comedy about a misfit teen in 1987 who turns into a glamorous, successful adult in 2004 seemingly overnight -- has a soundtrack that, appropriately enough, features 13 songs that span the '80s to the 2000s. The album plays a little fast and loose with what a 13-year-old girl in 1987 would've actually listened to; three of the album's best songs, the Go-Go's' "Head Over Heels," Rick Springfield's "Jesse's Girl," and Talking Heads' "Burning Down the House" are early-'80s classics, but seem like they'd be more likely found in the record collection of that 13-year-old's older brother or sister. Similarly, Vanilla Ice's 1990 guilty pleasure "Ice ...

Similarly, Vanilla Ice's 1990 guilty pleasure "Ice Ice Baby" comes from the years that the film's heroine seems to have lost. Tracks from the first wave of boy bands, such as New Edition or New Kids on the Block, or college rock or synth pop from the soundtracks from any of the John Hughes films from the mid-'80s would've been more authentic, but nitpicking aside, songs like Madonna's "Crazy for You," Soft Cell's "Tainted Love," and Pat Benatar's "Love Is a Battlefield" do more or less capture the era. As for the 21st century artists, Ingram Hill's "Will I Ever Make It Home" doesn't make much of an impression, but Lillix's cover of "What I Like About You" is serviceable, not as authentically gritty as the Donnas but a lot less sugary than the teen pop that usually appears on this kind of soundtrack. Liz Phair's "Why Can't I?" -- a song by a thirty-something carefully edited to appeal to 13-year-olds -- captures the feeling of the soundtrack: knowing and maybe a little contrived, but sweet to listen to nevertheless.

    GREAT!!!!!

Oldies but goodies! There are both old and new songs because the movie takes place in both times. They picked the most amazing songs to put on. It's an amazing movie with a great soundtrack.

Enjoyed Immensley.Would Desire in My Collection.

"Heather P." from Rovi Music really pushes the Collective Issues on Keeping this CD in its "Purist" Form,Musically."Thriller" was more than Likely a Copy Right Omission.{Remembering that Sir.Paul McCartney "Loss" His Catalog of Music Because He Did not Copy Right and was "scooped" up by another Musician/Singer.Possibly Sir.Paul Did Not "Own" the Beatles Music He co~wrote}.Permission and payment Is required Beyond 5 words. Both my husband and I thoroughly would purchase Film And CD.It has nothing to do with Time Appropiate to Film.It was possibly a "bit of fluff".Never intended as an Award winning Film.Rather a true 'coming of age' for those whom look back at their Halcyon Days wistfully.Rovi Music leads One down a Garden Path of either They Singularly Adore or Disapprove of Music.Picking is Un~Necessary.Your Reviews Pre~Determine Buyer's Choices.Am uninterested in Critic's Opinions.I know what I Like.Music Is Fun,regardless of Genre and Decade w/Film.

    Great movie and sountrack!

Im a dancer and i was looking for songs for my solo i swear i probably bought 15 cds before i picked a song to do my solo too!!!! I couldnt find songs that were easy to dance too and i was excited to dance to thriller and it wasnt even on here! But then again i was pretty close to choosing one of the songs! The music in this cd is over all pretty great!! Good Job creators of 13 going on 30 its finally not a movie about a book becuase they couldnt think of anything better to make a movie of! And good taste in music for the movie, it matched up really good!! Thanx!

    WHAT'S GOING ON???

Great soundtrack, but where's the most important song fo the movie? Hello, Thriller, where is it? It's the biggest song in the movie, it should be on there!

    Great Movie

This movie was the best! I really enjoyed it. Jennifer Garner was wonderful in it, no one else could've played that part but her. Soundtrack is great too, but like everyone else said, where is Thriller?
